Twenty-ten was huge for Social. We saw baby companies grow to giants, old giants fall and innovation beyond our wildest dreams, but what does that mean for 2011?
Facebook and Twitter and YouTube are all dominant, but that doesn't mean permanently dominant. 2011 will bring more innovation from them and others to further strike footholds into the digital market.
We should see some incredibly huge buy-outs, and some extraordinarily large sums of money changing hands. The usual Google/Yahoo/Microsoft/AOL suspects will be spending large of course.
We will see a larger commercial explosion utilising much of the geolocation/crowdsourcing technologies we have so far only used for fun, and 'Social' experiences becoming more serious, more integrated with everyday life.
On the handheld device front, expect more power at your fingertips, a larger competition-level on the mobile and tablet market, and further, deeper integration into our home life.
Where do you think it's all going?

Where can I get business articles written?
Interestingly, content is important for both SEO and Social campaigns. Content provides some important benefits to your site including:
New generation of keywords to rank for
An increased 'weight' of your site
A collection point to measure campaign effectiveness
Landing pages
Blog material
Supporting information
Pages for new products
Pages for product variations
and much more
New articles should be written around 250-300 words and contain keyw0rd-saturation, a method of inserting relevant keywords to your specific industry.
If you need to take advantage of the wide advantages of a content-rich site experience, we can help:

Being Social without doing much at all
You might think we're already there. Sitting in front of a computer or staring mindlessly at a handheld device and digitally "socialising", but we're not even half way to awesomeness.
Being "social" is about to become much more than just plain sharing images, locations and comments - it'll soon consume our private lives, and consume our public lives.
Take communication for example - traditional telephones are being outdated at an alarming rate, being replaced by VOIP systems and Skype phones.
Our TV's are now displaying internet content and our gaming devices are smarter than ever.
Integration is the key, and is what we'll see a lot of in 2011. A massive boom in Social Technology, taking our lives to the next level, making our lives that much more fantastic.

Can Social Technology Empower Humanity?
It's interesting to note that Social Technology is growing beyond the means of communication and education.
I've been privy to some top secret projects on the cards and will be launching in 2011.
Some of these projects use API's of readily-available online tools to engage and promote the existence of us as human beings.
Others serve the purpose of preserving that existence.
Will 2011 bring a giant leap forward in the way we use the internet and handheld devices?
We think so!

Social Gaming the next Advertising Front
Study reveals some games have larger audiences than prime-time TV.
If you've ever heard of Farmville, or been annoyed at someone on Facebook asking you for grains for their sheep, you know about a platform with over 30 million weekly users.
That's more than Dancing with the Stars (20m), NCIS (18m) and The Mentalist (15m).
So what makes Social Gaming so compelling? It's the fact that you're not only being entertained, but you're playing against friends, or potential friends.
Some of the biggest Social Games, including Farmville, Frontierville (17m), and Texas Hold'Em Poker (16m), have planned advertising within the game experience itself. This means that your business could soon be integrating more tightly, within the relaxed, social entertainment mediums that your customers are spending plenty of eye-time on.
What do you think? Social Gaming just "games"?

Visa the next victim in WikiLeaks hacker backlash
A group called "Anonymous" are on an "Operation Payback" to attack every site denying service to controversial WikiLeaks.
First, Mastercard paid the price, then Senator Joe Lieberman's website, then Sarah Palin's website, then PostFinance, and now Visa's website has suffered an attack.
A string of websites denying Wikileaks the ability to act of freedom of speech and information have been the target of a Denial of Service campaign by supporters of the controversial site.
Other sites in the firing line have been the lawyer representing founder Julian Assange's alleged rape victims, and the Swedish prosecutor's website. Twitter was also named as a target for supposedly 'removing' Wikileaks from trending topics.
PostFInance, a bank withholding payment from Assange, was hit the hardest, leaving customers with inability to conduct any form of banking.
PayPal, Amazon, US and Australian Government sites have also been named as potential targets.
For a complete rundown of the "war" check out this blog.

New Facebook Profiles Released Early!
Tomorrow, we would have found out about Facebook's new Profile pages, but it seems that if you just visit http://ping.fm/oykk8 you can get there early.
What does it look like? Well, a bit of the old Facebook, mixed in with a bit of the new. It looks more interactive, and the images are noticeably larger.
What is the significance of it all you may ask? It's about deeper integrations into our lives, more detailed relationships, new features, better personal info, interests as images and a whole slather of stuff we're just uncovering now...
What do you think of the new Facebook Profile Pages?

DKNY's Facebook Page Attacked by Anti-Fur Protesters
Rabbit fur is to blame for the attack on DKNY by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Thirteen people changed their Facebook profile images to single letters and posted in quick succession to the DKNY Facebook Page, spelling out "DK BUNNY BUTCHER" in protest of the high-fashion brand's use of rabbit fur in its latest campaign.
Surprisingly the protest is still live, and has been exposed to over 200,000 of the brand's fans - many of which have joined the protest.
For reasons unknown DKNY has not removed or responded to any of the backlash comments against it.

Google to buy Groupon.com - for $6 Billion
That's right, six billion dollars. The world has gone mad.
The move by Google has been described as "imminent", with acquisition of the coupon-sharing site taking the Social world by storm.
Groupon.com is only really a big thing in the US, with over 12 million active users. It's large revenue stream and interest base have tweaked the interest of Google, which has been extremely keen on entering the Social Media world.
Google believes it can severely reduce Groupon's running costs and therefore turn it into a multi-billion dollar business - and take it worldwide.
To put it into perspective, Google purchased YouTube for $1.1 billion.

Amazon Bans Wikileaks Growth Plans
The whistleblower website WikiLeaks.org's popularity has boomed, but migrating to a new server seems almost impossible.
Amazon Web Services, a giant in the e-commerce cloud computing and hosting services, has officially banned Wikileaks from its servers.
The ban came in at just under a day, when Wikileaks migrated from its Swedish servers to Amazon's servers, only to be booted off in under 24 hours.
The move comes as intense scrutiny of the site and Denial of Service attacks pose security risks to Amazon's servers. Amazon certainly does not want to misalign itself politically.
So far, over 250,000 leaked documents have appeared on Wikileaks, including sensitive Iraq war documents.

WikiLeaks.org under a Denial of Service attack
It is a conspiracy?
Not too many government organisations are fans of wikileaks.org, so it's not surprising that Wiki Leaks have many powerful enemies. But why?
It could be that they published the largest source of incriminating leaked documents from the US-led Iraq invasion, or they are in the presence of something much more severe.
Personally, we here at Strongman Digital thing that Wiki Leaks empowers and even glorifies leaked information.
We also think this is extremely important for Freedom of Speech, for which without it, our news outlets, Twitter, Facebook and lives in general would be under the constant heavy hand of some governmental power.
So who is attacking Wiki Leaks? Many seem to think it is the government organisations themselves. Who would want to see Wiki Leaks go down? The general public certainly don't.

Facebook Aiming to Trademark the Word 'Face'
A Notice Of Allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office has been issued to Facebook, meaning it's closer to suing us all for mentioning the word 'face'.
It's true. Although not yet theirs, Facebook is three months and a payment away from owning a word that many of us have taken for granted.
Many are confused as to how such a generic word could be trademarked, and follows another attempt by Facebook to try and trademark the word 'book' as well.
The pending document reads:
"The trademark covers the word face only in the context of “telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars.”
Should anyone be allowed to trademark a commonly used word? http://ping.fm/JYrbt

Facebook Alternative 'Diaspora' Goes Private Alpha
The 'Anti-Facebook', loaded with extreme privacy measures launches, but uptake extremely slow.
Diaspora, created by four New York University students, has launched, aiming to counter Facebook's privacy issues in a completely new format.
The freshness of the platform means no one is really there just yet, making it hard for anyone to evaluate its effectiveness and therefore understand if this is a serious competitor to Facebook or not.
What is interesting is that when the team initially began to develop Diaspora, they hoped to raise $10,000 to fund their full-time Summer project, and somehow managed to attract over $200,000 instead.

Aussie Uses YouTube to Crash a US Thanksgiving
A case of mistaken identity helped Australian journalist James West to US fame and glory.
It started innocently enough, James West receiving emails every Thanksgiving from the Tran family in West Palm Beach, Florida. What the Tran family didn't know is that this James West, was not the person they intended to email.
What followed is a batch of five YouTube videos from the Australian, with a plea to be invited as a guest to the Tran family's Thanksgiving feast - and it worked.
In the latter part of the series, James Google-stalks the family to find intimate details about them all.

Social Media Killing Phone Calls
There aren't too many traditional communication tools that have not been affected by Social Networking, but one, seemingly unkillable activity, is on a steep decline.
The real-time effectiveness of Social Networking allows for easy and free communication between one or many parties, instantly.
For many, these exchanges have replaced their need for emphasis on emails and SMS, and replaced them with current, relevant and instant bursts of communication.
So how is the humble telephone call faring?
Before the advent of SMS and mobile emails, phone calls were a part of life. As our mobile devices became easier and more efficient the phone call entered its darkest hour - and it only gets worse.
Facebook and Twitter have removed the need for voice communication whatsoever, instead allowing to efficiently collaborate with many at will.
Tools like Skype and Google Talk added fuel to the fire, providing us with free voice and video chat, should we still wish to work our vocal chords out.
So what we are seeing, is the toys of the desperate and nerdy, become important tools for the evolution of humanity through digital means.
It will never slow down.

The real-time effectiveness of Social Networking allows for easy and free communication between one or many parties, instantly.
For many, these exchanges have replaced their need for emphasis on emails and SMS, and replaced them with current, relevant and instant bursts of communication.
So how is the humble telephone call faring?

Eighty-five million and counting is the latest figures from the world's most popular professional network.

LinkedIn's Hiring Solutions product has also proved successful, now eclipsing LinkedIn's advertising revenue for the first time ever.
Their net worth is now estimated at more than $2 billion, as they continue to differentiate their network from more 'personal' ones like Facebook.

Temando: The Easy Solution To Freight's Biggest Headaches
With Shopping, Hotels and Flights as easy as a click, sending goods just got a whole lot easier.
Australian innovation is behind the latest in sending and receiving goods, Temando.com. The website plugs into your favourite sellers and helps you work out what the best, fastest, cheapest, safest option is.
The concept was created after the Sydney-based team noticed that irregular and complex pricing, and low customer focus meant that sending freight was a chore that could take up to an hour if you called around.
With the web moving the way it is, Temando is a tremendous leap for the digital age, and with plans to integrate more tightly with eBay, it could prove to be the shape of things to come.

Time To Get Your Masterchef On, Online
Australia's latest addiction to the cooking craze meets Dish Of The Day.
What was thought of as a spontaneous and interesting experiment by the Ten Network, brought us an onslaught of cooking shows and competitions.
Online though, it remained business as usual, until now. DishOfTheDay.com.au is an interesting concept, pitting anyone and everyone against each other with their own recipes to compete for prizes.
It has an incredibly simple format and is seeing a continual stream of visitors as it nears its official grand opening.
Opportunities such as these have been popping up all over the place, leaving the business world to wonder - where is the opportunity for my business to get amongst it all?

The New Facebook Messages and You
It's official, we're going to get @facebook.com email addresses but that's not the end of it.
Problem with modern workplaces is that Facebook is generally banned or blocked, meaning you cannot talk to anyone.
Having an @facebook.com email address will allow you to continue Facebooking by emailing recipients - unless of course your workplace also blocks the facebook.com domain from your inbox.
"Project Titan" will roll out to all Facebook users within the next few months and expect big things from your Messages inbox from there on.
It will allow you to combine your SMS, Emails, chats and other stuff into one area, meaning you'll be spending more time on Facebook, and less time doing anything else.
Your email address will be your profile link name (facebook.com/username).
More details as they are released!

http://www.strongmandigital.com.au/2010/11/15/fb-com-and-an-facebook-com-email-account-google-and-gmal-prepare-for-battle/
Facebook's recent 'purchase' (it isn't really confirmed as to whether it was recent or not, but the change to the domain is very recent) of fb.com should bring some shivers to their competitors.
Typing fb.com into your browser now takes you straight to facebook.com, meaning you only have to press 5 keys and 'enter' to get to Facebook instead of the traditional 13 and 'enter'... but that isn't the big news.
The big news is this: type mail.facebook.com and you'll see a portal to Outlook online. Outlook, being a Microsoft product, and their partnership with Facebook means only one thing - Facebook is out to get Google's Gmail.
Now, both Facebook and Microsoft will have to work hard to catch the popularity and intuitiveness of Gmail, but gimmicks aside, could the @facebook.com domain push its 500million-strong audience away from Gmail?
The full announcement of Facebook's "Project Titan" will be made today, where Facebook's first real blow against Gmail will be understood.
Still think Facebook is just a toy? http://ping.fm/ataP6

Facebook Posts Now Considered "Free Speech"
A recent Facebook-related termination was considered 'unlawful' after employee derided her boss.
In the US, a simple request by an employee to her boss, ended in her using vulgar language against him on the popular social network.
After the boss refused her request, Dawnmarie Souza expressed her feelings against her boss, which resulted in co-workers joining in with unrestrained negativity.
Her actions resulted in her instant dismissal - however a federal agency has stated she made these comments in her own time and from her own computer - exercising her right to free speech.
They went further as to say that corporate Social Media policies that prohibit making negative remarks about their employer are in violation of labour laws that protect employees rights.

Microsoft Profits, but Loses Billions on Web
Windows 7, Office 2010 and Xbox 360 have helped Microsoft to a quarterly revenue record of $16.2 billion.
In contrast, Microsoft's online division posted losses of over $560million, putting it on track to losing more than $2 billion per year at this rate.
Microsoft places big hopes in its partnership with Yahoo, which reported a growth in search market share, but is still yet to translate profitably.
The partnership involves a merger of Yahoo Advertisers to Microsoft's adCentre - which plans to increase the reach of all Pay Per Click ads for both services.
Windows 7 smartphones and the Microsoft Kinect motion controller for Xbox 360 will undoubtably carry the company through the holiday season.

Facebook Will Display Over 1 Trillion Ads Per Year
During the third quarter this year, Facebook served up 297 billion display ads, making it undisputed king of ads.
The news has Facebook taking 23.1% of the whole online advertisement market, and is exponentially growing compared with last-years results which were half of that.
By comparison, Yahoo is second, displaying 141 billion ads, and coming third is Microsoft with only 5% market share.
Surprisingly Google sits at 5th place with 2.7%.
Facebook's figures prove that over the next 9 months, if it maintains its advertising momentum, it will eclipse the one trillion impressions mark.
Growth in the online advertising space is 22%, year-over-year.

Should I search on Google or Twitter?
With Twitter now the second biggest search engine, the question for you now is: which one do I use?
Of course, the big branded Google with it's incredibly awesome search has enriched our lives to no end, but we have to remember that the brains behind Google's efficient browser is an algorithm, a machine, if you will.
Twitter on the other hand is plain and simply, human. All content, trends, links, images, video, sentiment... It's all human. What this means is that Twitters relevance is higher than that of Google - but only if you value real-time, currency and crowdsourced answers imports t in your search.
So powerful is the Twitter content engine, that Google itself has adapted it's search results to display Twitter content. Proving once and for all, that human influence presides over efficient machine relevance.
So which one is right for you? If you want clean, unadulterated answers, uninfluenced answers, and answers you can take to the bank, it might be time to give Twitter a go.
Google has been "gamed" with excessive SEO, and Twitter itself, apart from some hiccups, is proving a powerhouse in search.
If your business needs to combat Google with Twitter, we're here: http://ping.fm/vCYLS

Where should I ask my question? LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter?
Asking and answering questions has gone beyond the personal level. The interaction enabled with asking and answering has allowed a wealth of knowledge from credible sources to be retained for free, at the benefit of the whole population.
So if you're going to ask a question, where should you ask it? The answer lies within the nature of the audience:
LinkedIn: LinkedIn's Answers is a brilliant space, full of exceptionally qualified professionals. Only ask questions here that are serious in nature and you expect a serious response. Most times, you can take that answer straight to the bank. By answering a question on LinkedIn, you're asserting the fact that your business actually cares, and that you are personable, an important characteristic in business.
Facebook: The home of 500 million+ members and rising. It's hard to ignore Facebook, but easy to work out the userbase. Here, users are more relaxed, and are ready to answer you on a much more personal-experience kind of level. Ask questions here that you would like a "general audience" answer to. Make sure to evaluate a couple of answers to guage the type of response you should have, as most responses are not supplied by qualified individuals.
Twitter: As much as Facebook Answers is taking off, you can't deny the magic of Twitter. Most people would not think of this micro-blogging platform as a Question/Answer base, but people are taking advantage of the real-time opportunities of Twitter for both business and personal use. Asking a question on Twitter leaves you open to unimaginable exposure, and can build equally enormous exposure for someone, or some entity, that has the answer.
Does your business have a question-answer strategy? http://ping.fm/g6nvE

Guide to #Hashtags and @Usernames
Often, I'm confronted with people confused about when to use a hashtag and when to use an @username.
It's interesting to note this Twitter-induced phenomenon and how it is making the web a more refined, people-friendly place.
hashtags were introduced to allow a user to promote the subject of their Tweet or Post without the reader having to comprehend it on their own. The hashtag was also introduced as an easier means of filtration, to be able to cut through the noise and view everything being said about a specific hashtag.
hashtags also provide a brilliant indicator as to the popularity (or currency) of a specific topic, hence the Twitter top trends.
@usernames are used when you want to talk, ReTweet or mention someone in your Tweet or post. This is especially useful when you need to alert someone to your Tweet - it almost guarantees it to be seen by that person, if not the audience (or Followers) of that person.
Using an @username also gives your Tweet credibility and reach, and exposes it to more opportunities for wide-scaled mentions.
Twitter is diabolically good for business. Find out how: http://ping.fm/9Btm0

It's interesting to note this Twitter-induced phenomenon and how it is making the web a more refined, people-friendly place.
hashtags were introduced to allow a user to promote the subject of their Tweet or Post without the reader having to comprehend it on their own. The hashtag was also introduced as an easier means of filtration, to be able to cut through the noise and view everything being said about a specific hashtag.

iPhone vs Android: The Numbers
Nine per cent is all that separates the market share between iPhone and Android.
Apple's iPhone, once unshakeable in its dominance is fighting a battle with Google's Android, which trails the iPhone market share by nine per cent.
The news makes Android the fastest-growing mobile platform of all time, while Apple reels with a slight decline in popularity.
Other operating systems are also feeling the strain, with sharp declines in usership reported for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.
It is believed that the strong Google brand, coupled with it's "Droid" marketing and the partnership with manufacturer HTC has helped Android soar - outselling iPhone sales for the first time ever in the first half of 2010.
If your strategy is a little outdated, we'll bring you up to speed: http://ping.fm/8aM7H

Twitter Refines its Advertising Platform
Promoted Tweets has relaunched, now with more relevance.
We've experienced the test runs with the likes of Coca-Cola and Toy Story 3, but now Twitter says Promoted Tweets is almost ready for general use.
To save Twitterers from being bombarded by ads they don't care about, Twitter now monitors individual Tweets, followers and search behaviours, before displaying a Promoted Tweet on a user's account. The in-stream advertising move has sparked new interest in the platform, including new ads by Virgin, Starbucks and Red Bull.
This means that Promoted Tweets will allow your company exposure to the right types of people, increasing qualified clicks and re-tweeting opportunities.

The Social Network, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook
Watched The Social Network movie last night and found it extremely engaging.
It was interesting to watch Eisenberg play the Zuckerberg part, and entertaining to see Justin Timberlake take ownership of the leadership rolein Napster.
As promised, the move has all the ingredients for a memorable experience: drama, backstabbing, comedy - all set in a modern and current format.
Overall, the movie is highly recommended. It is inspirational and entertaining and shows the life of a startup company with a promising future.
What are the takeaway values that The Social Network gave us? For one, motivation. It shows just how one man in his dorm room, or garage, or library - can change the world through code.
Facebook alone is an extremely powerful tool, however code itself, and its manipulatable nature can really help any business, small and large, achieve extraordinary things - it just has to be good enough to go viral.
If your business could use a virally-addictive strategy, we can help: http://ping.fm/aRGNW

Top 5 Ways Your Workplace Could Embrace Social Media
"Really? Social Media? How could there possibly be any value whatsoever to my business?"... if that sounds like you, read on.
Firstly, it's important to realise what Social Media really IS. The inner critic in all of us is resistant to change. Change makes many feel uncomfortable. Couple that with the unpredictability of Social Networking, and you have a nice case for the old block via firewall mechanism.
Is Social really your enemy? Just like in the real world, making a fool of yourself is likely to be social suicide - the same goes for online... but how can you actually embrace Social as a tool to perhaps even drive new business??
Is there really a way to capitalise on all of that "procrastination" time by your employees?
Here's the Top 5 Ways Your Workplace Could Embrace Social Media:
Surveillance: What better way to satisfy the Facebook and Twitter related itches of your employees than to get them to perform surveillance tasks? Set aside a few minutes a day where everyone gets Googling/Facebooking/Twittering, looking for mentions of your company, interesting industry tid-bits, and prospective new business.
Brand Mentions: Using the collective access of your employees, you can instantly increase the reach of your message. Get them all to Tweet/Facebook a message to the world about your company, or your new blog, or some new promotion and instantly increase the exposure of your brand. Step and Repeat.
Competitor Tracking: There's nothing like healthy competition. Get your employees to check out what the competitor is up to online and have them all report back to you. You'd be surprised what you dig up and the potential opportunities that may appear.
Marketing Research: Ask each of your employees to find 3 of the most engaging Facebook brands, YouTube brands and Twitter brands and have them report them back to you. It's a great excuse to get something productive out of YouTube at least!
Viral Recruitment: The best part about Social Networking is the networking aspect itself. If your employees are going to be actively updating their statuses, you might as well allow them to say something like "Like our BRAND for an exclusive discount" or something along those lines. Why? Friends listen to friends.
The true potential of Social Media in the workplace is truly mind-boggling.
