New Film Will Depict Facebook's Highs and Lows
"You Can't Make 500 Million Friends Without Making A Few Enemies"
Such is the tagline to a movie about Mark Zuckerberg's road to the excessively popular Facebook social network that has paved a reason for Columbia Pictures to release a trailer about its upcoming release, The Social Network.
The teaser (which can be viewed below), is limited in detail, but conveys the essence of the power struggle that embodied Facebook during its conception in Mark Zuckerberg's dorm room.
Also referred to as "The Facebook Movie", the film is based in part on the book "The Accidental Billionaires", and was written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher. The movie aims to convey the loyalty, jealousy and greed of Facebook's early collaborators - and a 'coming to terms' of a couple of young people on their journey of creating something bigger than they anticipated.
Some critics have questioned the subject matter as an appropriate ground-frame for a movie - but with Social Media consuming every part of the globe, it was only a matter of time before the movie-makers decided to scrape off the peaches and cream of some of the most influential movers of this generation, and find out what really made them tick.
The Social Network debuts in October 2010.

Case Study: Coca-Cola Promoted Twitter Ad Nets 86 Million Impressions
As predicted, Twitter's new advertising model has taken advertising to new heights.
In just 24 hours, Coca-Cola's Promoted Trend had been splashed across 86 million Twitter accounts. The cost of this promoted Trend (Twitter is still testing and experimenting) was rumoured to be tens of thousands of dollars, but Coca-Cola Global Interactive Marketing Vice President Carol Kruse has said, the cost of the experiment is relatively small when compared to advertising/engagement values elsewhere.
The company was the second to engage Twitterers in this Promoted Trend test, after Disney/Pixar began to market Toy Story 3. Coca-Cola chose to engage Twitterers on Wednesday during key World Cup matches - a peak time for Twitter activity. This was also a risky move, considering Twitter experiences outages during severely heavy use - but for Coke, this has paid off.

In just 24 hours, Coca-Cola's Promoted Trend had been splashed across 86 million Twitter accounts. The cost of this promoted Trend (Twitter is still testing and experimenting) was rumoured to be tens of thousands of dollars, but Coca-Cola Global Interactive Marketing Vice President Carol Kruse has said, the cost of the experiment is relatively small when compared to advertising/engagement values elsewhere.
The company was the second to engage Twitterers in this Promoted Trend test, after Disney/Pixar began to market Toy Story 3. Coca-Cola chose to engage Twitterers on Wednesday during key World Cup matches - a peak time for Twitter activity. This was also a risky move, considering Twitter experiences outages during severely heavy use - but for Coke, this has paid off.

News: Google Has Gone World Cup Crazy Too!
Just when you thought Google's World Cup contribution was simply displaying results, Google decides it's just not enough.
If you've been watching any World Cup matches, you'll hear the constant drone of the Vuvuzela - a horn utilised by the crowd watching a match, which is annoying at the best of times. Google has decided that we have not had enough of the Vuvuzela, and given the billions of its users the ability to hear the Vuvuzela cry again, and again, and again, and again, and again.
Go to Google Street View, and visit South Africa, pretty much where all the stadiums are, and you'll find a peculiar character - a man clutching a Vuvuzela. Click on this little man, and you'l feel as if you were in South Africa right this second. If that's not enough, take a visit to YouTube (another Google toy), and make use of its Vuvuzela button as often as you wish.

If I needed a sudden burst of traffic
Taking things a little differently today, and flavouring the blog to cater to real-life requirements of the every-day business world.
Lets say you're launching a new product or service and you really want to get eyes on it, before your competition decides to step in and share the battlefield.
There's a few things you can do to make a big impact in the online marketplace, using the very tools that Social Media users are on all day.
Standalone website: Generally not the most important thing ever, but really makes an impression
Blog up a storm: Here's your chance to get some of your words cached by Google before anyone else does. Blog daily, twice daily - really get the word out
Tweet up a storm: Do your blogs some justice and utilise Twitter every chance you get
YouTube: Get creative with your handycam and post something to YouTube. Even if you only get 0.1% of YouTube's daily 2 billion video serves, you're still doing better than a TV advert
Create a Buzz: Virally Bookmark your work and engage with others in the Social Media world (that seem relevant to your cause). You never know what type of publicity their ReTweet might invite
Manage: Use services like SocialOomph to delay your Social Media posts, and use something like BackTweets to feed you any mentions of your brand/product/service/website/links.
By utilising this method over a short, but concentrated period of time, you can start to generate results both on Google and on Social Networks.

Smoke and Mirrors NO MORE! Google Buzz has a value?
Ok, so Google didn't really think Google Buzz through when it launched as a Twitter/Feeder/Blogging/RSS/Viral/Kitchen Sink, but is it still good for something?
First thing's first. Anything that Google develops or purchases, is worth tapping into. Google is not in the game of self-harm, and has a quest for digital domination. Sure it might have a few rubbish moves, but the tools Google develops are designed to keep you Googling - meaning that using Buzz is definitely not detrimental to your online efforts.
What is Google Buzz anyway? Well, it was kind of Google's response to the Twitter madness, that kind of evolved into a glorified RSS syndicated reader where you could follow anyone on the planet and keep updated about everything they do online (Twitter/Blog/Facebook etc). In theory, just like Communism, it all sounds like chocolate ice-cream, but in practice it lacked that community appeal.
However, you can still benefit Socially and with your Google rankings by tapping into Buzz. Buzz has this great feature that allows you to sync your other Social Media tools, meaning everything you do on the web gets 'logged' into your Buzz feed. This will allow any one of your interested consumers the opportunity to see everything you do from one location.
Why even bother? Well, Google certainly would like Buzz to flourish, and would rather display Buzz results on the first page over Twitter/Facebook (if it had its way, it wouldn't even display these).
Why not? It costs nothing, takes a few minutes to set up, and you can then literally just sit back and enjoy the show.

First thing's first. Anything that Google develops or purchases, is worth tapping into. Google is not in the game of self-harm, and has a quest for digital domination. Sure it might have a few rubbish moves, but the tools Google develops are designed to keep you Googling - meaning that using Buzz is definitely not detrimental to your online efforts.
What is Google Buzz anyway? Well, it was kind of Google's response to the Twitter madness, that kind of evolved into a glorified RSS syndicated reader where you could follow anyone on the planet and keep updated about everything they do online (Twitter/Blog/Facebook etc). In theory, just like Communism, it all sounds like chocolate ice-cream, but in practice it lacked that community appeal.
However, you can still benefit Socially and with your Google rankings by tapping into Buzz. Buzz has this great feature that allows you to sync your other Social Media tools, meaning everything you do on the web gets 'logged' into your Buzz feed. This will allow any one of your interested consumers the opportunity to see everything you do from one location.
Why even bother? Well, Google certainly would like Buzz to flourish, and would rather display Buzz results on the first page over Twitter/Facebook (if it had its way, it wouldn't even display these).
Why not? It costs nothing, takes a few minutes to set up, and you can then literally just sit back and enjoy the show.

Case Study: Virgin Blue's Twitter Sale
In the quest to find some solid Australian examples of Commercialised Social Media, we came across good ol' Virgin Blue.
In a move that Virgin Blue CEO Brett Godfrey called an 'experiment', in August last year, Virgin Blue set out to see whether they could sell tickets through Social Media.
1000 fares were made available at $9 a pop to four routes: Canberra-Sydney, Port Macquarie-Sydney, Brisbane-Newcastle, and Rockhampton-Brisbane... and this is what happened.
Godfrey expected the tickets to sell out quickly, and they did. From the moment the sale was announced on Twitter, all 1000 $9 tickets were claimed in under 3 minutes. This is what he said after the sale:
“This is a bit of fun and also a bit of an experiment trialling distribution through one of the latest forms of social media,†Godfrey said.
“Our marketing team has been closely watching worldwide consumer trends in markets where travellers are already social media savvy and we see Australians fast developing a following for Twitter as a source of the latest information regarding a wide range of products and services including airline news,†he said.
Since the Virgin campaign's initial success, many more have followed, and other airlines and hotel providers have since jumped on the opportunities that Twitter has presented to them. Virgin Blue has since announced that due to Twitter's immediacy, their account is now being used to fill seats at the last minute.

News: World Cup Wreaks Havoc On Twitter
Record use of Twitter during the World Cup has caused Twitter to experience severe downtime in large, sporadic intervals.
It is now estimated there are over 100 million Tweets being sent daily, which is up from an average of 50 million daily Tweets this year. Twitter users trying to log in at peak times are seeing Twitter's 'fail whale'... as a matter of fact, at around 7am AEST (3pm ET), is when most of Twitter's US, UK, European and Asian peak usage overlaps - meaning the strain on Twitter becomes immense.
An event like the World Cup, which engages the whole planet, who send irregular bursts of Tweeting down the streams when a goal is scored or a game is won or lost, is an example of the tremendous growth of the Social web, and how traditional technology is severely struggling to keep up with human demands.
The spike of Twitter usage during the World Cup now makes it the fastest growing Social Media tool on the planet - yes, faster than Facebook.

Who's clicking on you? How do I find out?
We've all heard of Google Analytics right? (if you haven't, check out analytics.google.com to see a free tool that you simply cannot live without).
The greatest thing about Google Analytics is the fact that you are able to see any and every visit to your website/blog, from where they came, and the path that influenced them to get there. You can view by a daily summarly, past week, past year, or all time.
That's all well and good, but there are a TON of tools out there to give you more statistics than you can ever consume in a lifetime.
Here's a few that I use:
GoogleAnalytics: The be all and end all of analytics for your website
MailChimp: A paid service (after your free trial), but incredibly effective in tracking your email campaigns
FeedBurner: Subscribing is no longer reserved to an email system. An RSS subscriber statistic that integrated beautifully with Google's own Analytics system
Bit.ly: This is an example of how a link shortening service added incredible value to its userbase. You can customise your short links to include actual words, and then view a complete summary of click statistics
There are plenty more tools out there for analytical purposes. What's right for you and your business is entirely dependent on your market behaviours.
The beautiful thing about analytics is that it is almost a reward for all the hard work you're putting in to marketing yourself online.
