Google is no stranger to breaking records, but not even Wall Street estimated the substantial growth that Google is continuing to have.
The search giant made $9.03 billion in Q2 2011, which is a 32% increase over this time last year.
The figure is nearly half-a-billion more than Google made in Q1 2011.
So where does Google make its money?
69% from Google-owned sites ($6.23 billion)
28% from Google AdSense ($2.48 billion)
54% of its profits are from countries outside the US
In terms of expenses, Google employs 28,768 people full time (up from 26,316 just three months ago), and have an ever-expanding operating cost schedule, growing from $4.46 billion to $6.15 billion in just one year.

Google+ Nearing 10 Million Users
Google+ is gaining momentum, and fast. Although not quite nipping at Facebook's 700 million usership base, Google+ has within weeks achieved a monumental milestone.
At the time of writing, the numbers stood at around 9.5 million worldwide, with around 2.2 million people joining every 48 hours.
The most interesting thing about Google+, is that although the circles element is inherently restrictive and can be seen as anti-social, it is these circles that actually allow a Google+ user to get more out of life, whether they're using the network on their computer or on mobile.
Only time will tell whether Facebook has finally met its match.

Facebook Releases Video Chat
After much hype, Facebook has integrated video into its Facebook Chat feature.
It was only a matter of time before this would happen, as Facebook has always had close ties with Skype, and since Microsoft now owns Skype, it sealed the deal when it came to Facebook.
Only time will tell just how many people will use the video chat feature, as many are awaiting Google+ and its unique Video Hangout feature.

The king of search is coming for the king of Social.
Facebook, the unmistakeable champion of Social Networking and its 700 million users are about to get a real shake up.

Zuckerberg's Dog Has A Facebook Page
Beast. That's Mark Zuckerberg's new puppy's name and now has his own Page on his owner's social network.
The fluffy white Puli breed's Page features images of his famous Facebook CEO owner, and Priscilla Chan, Mark's girlfriend.
At the time of writing, the Page had 130,000 likes, but authenticity of the page has not been verified.
This follows the PR schedule of 'softening' Mark Zuckerberg's public image after the movie, The Social Network, painted him in a slightly negative light.
Other good PR methods have included donations of $100 million to schools, appearing on Saturday Night Live and also on 60 Minutes.

Lady Gaga and Social Media
Lady Gaga is no stranger to Social. Her music videos are created for YouTube before they are ever considered for television.
In a strange and uncharacteristic twist, Lady Gaga has joined Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in a $1 million investment into a Social Media startup.
Just as Ashton Kutcher put his money into startup hipmunk.com, Gaga's venture into startup backplane.com secures her as a 20% shareholder.
Backplane, which has been founded by Gaga's business manager Troy Carter, aims to blend technology and entertainment, combining big brands' various social presences into one platform.
Lady Gaga also has a partnership with online gaming mogul Zynga, search giant Google, shopping powerhouse Amazon and startup Gilt.

It's Official: Amazon Kindle Books Outselling Real Books
"We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly" - Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO.
It has only been around four years since Kindle electronic books were brought to market - and already Amazon.com is selling more of them than the paper option.
Amazon, which has been credited to the demise of the retail book industry itself (Borders bankrupt, Barnes and Noble severe losses - the list goes on) has now marked that beginning of the end for hard books.
Since April 1, for every 100 books Amazon sells, it has sold 105 Kindle books.

Purina Introduces Three iPad Apps - For Your Cat!
Video Here: http://ping.fm/ycDt9
This is not a joke - with Cat Fishing, Tasty Treasures Hunt and Party Mix-Up debuting to "entertain your cat".
In the video above, it shows cats "playing" the games, and Purina are working on making these available to Android tablet owners.
Feedback from cat owners has been generally positive, but with one down side.
Although cats are embracing the new technology, iPad owners say these apps were built for 'de-clawed' cats, as their screens are suffering from severe scratching.

How To Get A Custom Facebook Link For Your Business Page
Many people ask me how to get a custom Facebook link for their business.
For example, Strongman Digital's one is: http://ping.fm/ng24N
Generally, you do not have this option available to you if your Page is brand new. The general rule of thumb is that you need to have 15-30 likes before you have the option to update your link.
If you have that many (or more), simply go to http://ping.fm/QyMvd
From here, you'll be able to see if your personal and business page has the ability to have a custom link name.
Again, this is one of the main reasons to establish a Facebook Page sooner rather than later, as anyone with enough numbers can easily take a name and claim it as their own.

The Importance Of Separating Social Strategy
Although the field of Social Media is now flourishing is being collectively cast as "online marketing", I still see some questionable practices whereby a company has marketed themselves (sometimes synchronised) collectively on the big networks, rather than tailor each strategy.
The issue with this is that you're only appealing to one market at a time, and creating "noise" rather than potential for engagement.
Here's why:
Facebook: Here lives over 600 million consumers that behave almost selfishly. They'll like you if they perceive value, achieve gains or show affiliation, but unless you're constantly pushing for their online time, they're likely to forget about you - and in extreme cases, hide your posts from their wall. With Facebook, it becomes important to engage using voting/questions/multimedia/games/competitions to keep the ball rolling - to avoid becoming stale and forgettable.
Twitter: Yes, this is a broadcasting medium, but it does call for some creativity. Simply spewing excessive noise just won't cut it. You have to evolve what is current, portray your news as unique, and promote in ways that cause a chain-reaction in responses or retweets. Never waste a Tweet but not including a link to some other multimedia space where you can catch those interested parties, always mention others, and keep an eye on those trends.
LinkedIn: The interesting thing about this network is that it is "grown up". With almost 100 million professionals, simply feeding your synchronised Tweets to LinkedIn can cause you more headaches than you bargained for. Instead, look for opportunities to apply your industry knowledge by answering questions, joining discussions in groups, and interacting with others in your network. It's also a good idea to introduce some LinkedIn apps to keep the multimedia content alive.
YouTube: One of the most important mediums of our time. Introducing regular, engaging content is the key to your success. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be unique to you - and it will be seen. Too many opportunities are lost as YouTube becomes one of the 'final' landscapes of any major Social Media campaign, where in essence, it should be the most important of all.

Viral Marketing: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Appearing here: http://ping.fm/wxoFX
Viral Marketing isn't a new concept, but it has gained traction in recent years with the introduction of economical Social Media tools. YouTube is the main agent delivering Viral Marketing these days, boosted by the 'sharing' vehicles of Facebook and Twitter, and plently of companies have had a go.
The goal of viral marketing is to go 'viral', or to entice millions of the members of your audience, to spread the word about you.
Some have made it, others have suffered tremendously. Here's a list of some great campaigns, and others not so great.
The Good
Burger King: Subservient Chicken
http://ping.fm/Yeceo
A fantastic example of corporates doing something to engage the audience. Subservient Chicken features a website with what seems like a room and a man in a chicken suit. You type in instructions for the Chicken to perform. Quite Addictive
The numbers: 450 million hits
Blendtec: Will it Blend?
http://ping.fm/s5MjB
A great example of a small business completely dominating the 'blender' market. Each time they release a video of one of their blenders, completely annihilating a gadget/toy/popular item, they garner millions of views.
The numbers: 155 million hits
Queensland Tourism: Best Job In The World
http://ping.fm/o8Wky and http://ping.fm/zi3CZ
An incredible campaign which included posting job ads all over the world, for someone to win a role at a job on the Great Barrier Reef. Over $70 million in publicity was generated.
The numbers: 1 million website hits
Million Dollar Homepage
http://ping.fm/6Ynlu
A total sensation from the minute it was uploaded, it was the brainchild of an English student Alex Tew, to make $1 million by selling 1 million pixels on his site - and he did.
The numbers: 1 million pixels sold
One Red Paperclip
http://ping.fm/a9ycd
An amazing story of a girl named Kylie who started with a single red paperclip, and kept trading it up for items until she ended up swapping for a house.
The numbers: 1 paperclip = 1 house, 10 million hits
The Bad
Rebecca Black: Friday
http://ping.fm/Nu8pD
YouTube gone wrong. A girl with no talent, sings terrible lyrics (autotuned of course). Has more dislikes than Justin Bieber.
The numbers: 44 million people have had a laugh
Sony: All I Want For Xmas is a PSP
http://ping.fm/APvGJ (not live any more)
Sony tried their hand at the blogging propaganda machine by 'recruiting' a (fake) blogger to write up about how much people should be asking for a PSP for Christmas. Unfortunately the IP address of the blogger was traced back to other websites that included Sony as a client.
The numbers: 1 very embarrassed big brand
Pepsi: Dinner 2.0
http://ping.fm/9UIV5
Pepsi remade an old Coke vs Pepsi video in the hopes to spark a pro-Pepsi revolution, but all of the sentiment proved Coke is still number one in the consumer's eyes.
The numbers: Coke 1 : Pepsi 0
General Motors: Create Your Own Ad
http://ping.fm/7kd0N
Although most of the shreds of evidence are long gone, some websites have preserved the best of GM's campaign backfire. GM wanted people to create their own ad of their (then) new car, the Chevy Tahoe. What resulted is a collection of pro-environmental ads, which were naturally anti the SUV.
The numbers: 1 GM Legal Team desperately trying to retaliate
Splinter Cell: Marketing With Murder Threats
http://ping.fm/2XCf8
Harmless enough (or not), Xbox game Splinter Cell: Conviction decided to market their product a little different, and hire an actor to dress as a terrorist and point it at some New Zealanders at a popular bar. Before another paid actor was to come in and save the day, the police got their first.
The numbers: 20 freaked-out revellers, 2 cautioned actors, 1 embarrassed marketing company

Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5 billion
In what was rumoured to be a bidding war between Facebook and Microsoft, ended with a price tag not seen for quite some time.
While we (in Australia) were all sleeping, Microsoft bought the Estonian company Skype for $8.5 billion.
What makes this even more tremendous, is that Skype isn't even profitable as yet - and has tremendous debt.
Last year Skype's revenues sat at $860 million, and had operating profits of $264 million. The company also carries $686 million in debt.
It is believed the Skype purchase was a tasty one by Microsoft: to further integrate into the Social web, and to claim its large userbase of 663 million users.
What do you think about the Skype purchase? Would it be better suited to Facebook?

What do you think about the Skype purchase? Would it be better suited to Facebook?

Is AOL Going The Way Of MySpace?
Despite the recent acquisitions of TechCrunch and Huffington Post, AOL's profits have fallen 86%.
Another giant of the web struggles to hold on, as advertising revenue fell 11% to $313.7 million.
The sharpest nosedive in usership came from Search, which fell 21% and international display ads falling a shocking 46%.
As a result of the lower AOL userships, they've also felt the pain of declining subscriptions - with most diverting away to their competitors: Google, Bing and Yahoo.

It started with some buzz on Twitter to spread early news of Osama Bin Laden's death, and then Google copped it good.
As a matter of fact, it took only one hour for the traffic to spike one million per cent on May 1 7:30 to 8:30pm PST according to Google.

First Blockbuster, Now DVD's Failing In General
Netflix was attributed to the demise of Blockbuster, now the whole DVD industry has taken a 20% battering.
Purely digital movies might be taking over faster than we think, as the Digital Entertainment Group, which monitors DVD sales worldwide, found that DVD sales fell 20% in Q1 2011.
It also noted that home theatre sales worldwide fell 10%, and blames the "electronic sell-through", ie iTunes and Netflix, for stealing their market.
In fact, iTunes sales grew 11% over in the same period, while video-on-demand is up 9%.

How This Twitterer Broke News Of Osama's Death - By Accident
FULL ARTICLE HERE: http://ping.fm/DoXeR
Meet Sohaib. Around nine hours ago, he was just just trying to get some sleep in his neighbourhood of Abbottabad, Pakistan, but all he could hear was a helicopter hovering outside.
"Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event)."
What came next was a "huge window shaking bang" and for the next few hours, he, and other local Twitterers and local news speculated that it was either a UFO, a noisy spy craft or the Taliban:
"Since taliban (probably) don't have helicpoters, and since they're saying it was not "ours", so must be a complicated situation"
What Mr Athar didn't know, that only a few blocks outside his home, Osama bin Laden had just been assassinated.
A quiet IT employee, his Twitter following and media requests have skyrocketed some nine hours after the revelation.
Only time will tell what this means to this accidental reporter, who broke the big news in real-time, but just didn't know it.
Here's all of the collected Tweets from his account @reallyvirtual so far:

Can Your CV Do This?
Completely creative use of QR codes sets Victor Petit's resume apart from others - and lands him a job.
It all started with a one-page resume. Simple enough - but way too common.
Instead of fighting for attention with brilliant designs or a clever uncommon font, Victor Petit applied for a Digital Communications role by proving his creativity.
Fashioning a QR code onto a picture of his own face, the recipient of the CV would simply scan it and turn this static image into a moving and talking mouth.

Royal Wedding will be Tweetless
Westminster Abbey installing signal-jamming technology to keep the wedding, a wedding.
Members of the royal family have collaborated with police and security to introduce the systems which they hope will cut down on distractions during the ceremony.
The main concerns of the organisers were Twitter, photography, video recording and message and call ringtones.
Buckingham Palace is serious about removing the threat of Social Media, already dismissing a guard for calling Kate Middleton a "stuck up cow" and "posh bitch" on his Facebook page.

Political Correctness? How Big Brands are Saying F*ck You to Tradition
Political Correctness. The 'tasteful' core ingredient in financially sapping television campaigns.
Online, specifically YouTube and its comedy counterpart Funny Or Die, has changed all that and made producing and marketing videos so economically sound and viewerships equivalent to Powerball jackpots.
Normal, polished videos just don't cut it online, so brands, in an attempt to connect with the YouTube/Funny Or Die culture, have come up with some real gems.
These videos contain everything your favourite TV network won't ever let you watch. If you're easily offended, you're probably better off watching daytime television infomercials.

Does this convicted felon own 50% of Facebook? http://www.strongmandigital.com.au/2011/04/15/does-this-convicted-felon-own-50-of-facebook/
Does this convicted felon own 50% of Facebook?
Paul Ceglia is unknown, even unnanounced in The Social Network movie - but his current lawsuit could change all that.
Despite all the controversies with the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin, we all thought Facebook was undoubtedly Zuckerberg's.
However, a new lawsuit claiming a written contract and an exchanged $1,000 arises from a convicted conman named Paul Ceglia - and it actually looks quite credible.
The alleged contract between Mark Zuckerberg and Paul Ceglia is from the early days of 'the face book' project, and a request for funding to help Zuckerberg get 'Facebook' off the ground.
The contract also states that Ceglia was entitled to an extra 1% of ownership for each day that 'the face book' was not launched after an agreed launch date - potenitally 84% of Facebook today.

General Practitioners now have a chance at being paperless
Dr Crono is an iPad app developed to log and show everything a medical practitioner could ever need.
The App, which has only just been released into Beta testing mode, has been designed to sync with current medical software, meaning it could even do away with computers in the surgery.
Physicians can schedule/change appointments, write electronic prescriptions sent to any pharmacy, bill, take notes, record voice and translate to text, and perform interaction tests.
It also has the capacity to bring up x-rays and lab test results instantly - tagging them to a patient and saving them for later.
Although only released in the US for now, it brings a massive change to the medical industry's practices.

April 16 is now Foursquare Day
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially proclaims April 16th to be 'Foursquare Day'.
What started as a comical and off the cuff remark by a Foursquare user, has now escalated into a full-scale event of recognition.
Nate Bonilla Warford commented last year that because four-squared is 16, therefore 16/04 should be called Foursquare Day - and had no idea that it would actually be recognised.
The idea gained traction with Foursqure users and used Social Media channels to promote the event.

Case Study: Why Social Technology is Killing Retail
It used to all be about bricks and mortar - in fact - that was the only way could be taken seriously back only a few years.
Walking through one of Queensland's busiest shopping centre just last week, on a school holiday on 'late night' trade, I came to notice a trend that may scare traditional retailers (although they're probably aware of it already).
What I noticed is that traditional retailers haven't changed in years - but their customers have. Although there were plenty of people in the shopping centre, there was no one in the stores. In some I'd find 10 staff members and maybe two or so 'customers', a trend that was repeated through 80% of shops I looked into.
Coincidence? Probably not. I went to the http://abs.gov.au for their retail figures this year, and for the most part, since 2009, retail is on the downward turn from a flatline.
As suspected, food retailers like supermarkets are experiencing growth (people have to eat), but health awareness has left cafes, takeaway and restaurants suffering a severe drop in popularity:
What was really noticeable, was the downward trend in 'stuff you can get cheaper online', such as clothing, footwear and personal accessories:
Household goods were also at the mercy of a decline in consumer interests:
Overall, department stores are also feeling the strain:
So what does this mean? Can you blame it on the floods like everyone is trying to? Or should you be looking at the trends of the online world, specifically social technologies.
Group buying is a relatively new phenomenon, but already is a $63 million industry in Australia alone, and is projected to grow to $242 million this year - a tremendous growth for a relatively new technology for Australians. Who wouldn't want to save up to 90% on things?
eBay revenue stands at $9.1 billion per year and is growing at an average of 5% year on year - an already established online shopping behemoth.
With these tools and Google at everyone's side, it's not that people are buying less, it's that they're getting smarter. Researching, scanning barcodes with their iPhone Apps and finding the cheapest place to get the item - most of the time directly from the manufacturer or a global merchant.
Yes, it has become a global economy, where people rely on other people's technology to source things a cheap as possible. Where a small-time online store, or app developer, can generate millions in revenues just for empowering the citizens.
It's one of the main reasons why Amazon continues to grow, while Borders is bankrupt. Why Blockbuster is a dwindling giant of the last century, while Netflix owns the new release streaming market. Why Colorado group buckles under tremendous debt, while collective fashion trends spike astronomically online.
Anyone that doubts this hasn't seen the light. Or the site. Or the app.

Unbelievable New Mercedes, Loaded with Tablet Tech
The once boring A-class Mercedes Benz were reserved for the lower end Mercedes market, or those looking for an entry point to the luxury car market.
Perhaps now even the 'forgettable' A-class is now out of reach.
Mercedes-Benz have completely redesigned and flipped the new generation A-class to a level unmatched by any car manufacturer. This shows that even traditional technologies, like motor vehicles, cannot ignore the shift towards a more social, more handheld, more intuitive control.
The exterior styling resembles lines that are difficult to stop looking at... but what is even more unbelievable, on the inside, a tablet gives you full control of the vehicle.

Crying YouTube Kid Becomes Governor of New Jersey
A crying wish from a three-year old boy on YouTube is granted - for one day only.
Well that proves it. If you can't get your own way, just cry and it'll happen.
The 2009 video (http://ping.fm/DY5aY) shows Jesse Koczon as a three-year old, crying because he is too small to be a governor - and he was right at the time.
Two years later, Governor Chris Christie signed a proclamation appointing the boy, now five, an honorary governor of New Jersey.
His twin brother who also appeared in the video, was made honorary lieutenant governor.

"Damn Japan" Trends on Twitter as World Reacts to Aftershocks
Global Twitter reactions to the 7.1 magnitude quake contain mostly "damn" and "Japan".
Twitter's trending topics are formulated on an algorythm that finds topics talked about most based on volumes of keywords used together in Tweets.
So as news broke of Japan's next quake, the microblogging site went balistic with reactions from the public.
Although painting a grim picture, "Damn Japan" is the result of many tweets along the lines of "Damn, why doesn't mother nature leave Japan alone!", or "Damn, another earthquake for Japan".

Want Stock Market Success? Get Twitter
A study by a German PHD student finds that Twitter predicts the future of stocks.
Just when you think Twitter is just people spewing their 140 characters in an effort to get 'heard', comes a new bombshell.
The study from the Technical University of Munich, which analysed 250,000 tweets over a six-month period, found that an average return rate of 15% could be achieved by investors following stock market tweets.
Calling it a "legitimate source", Timm Sprenger announced a "striking co-ordination" between what Tweeting investors were saying, and what market analysts were finding.
The reTweeting process put further weight on these stock-related tweets (which use the company stock symbols to differentiate them from standard tweets), showing others support certain predictions over others.

Color: The Mobile Social Network That Makes Sense
What has been seen a great proximity-based innovation, has landed $41million in funding and is taking the US by storm.
Still not available in Australia, Color (that's the way the Americans spell it!) allows you to interact with those that you normally wouldn't interact with.
Imagine you're at a party, sitting around with your group of friends, while other groups of friends do the same. Using the Color app, you can take photos and videos, and that content is instantly visible by anyone within a close range to you, and their content is seen by you.
The people within your 'elastic' area, become connections, or people you have the potential to meet, based on the content they're sharing, and you can comment on every piece of content visible.
When you leave that party, you leave behind those potential connections, but he content is stored on your device forever, leaving nothing but memories.
Here's the video of how it works:

Gmail Motion April Fools Prank, Now A Reality
For some people, it just wasn't acceptable that Gmail announced a motion-sensitive way of gesturing with Gmail a few days ago.
The April Fools prank suggested gestures that you could use to interact with Gmail and send emails with a flick of the hands, using a regular webcam.
In the US, the guys at the Institute of Creative Technologies were seemingly upset by Google's little hoax, so they decided to do something about it.
They hooked up the Microsoft Kinect motion controller to their laptop, and programmed an application titled SLOOW, which stands for Software Library Optimising Obligatory Waving.
They also created an application called FAAST, which means Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit to control World of Warcraft.
Here's the video showcasing an outstanding leap forward in email technologies http://ping.fm/RBkT0

Faux Ads: This Is How You Viral
If anything speaks volumes in the corporate world, it's marketing success.
Some big companies are still too uptight to let their guard down, and thus, are frustrated with their lack of appeal online.
Disney/Pixar are well used to Social Media, and they don't promote their new movies in any 'normal' way.
Take this latest 60's rip-off car merchant video to market their new movie, Cars 2.
It contains a "poorly" produced, slimy video, with a 'secret' link to an unlisted YouTube clip, hidden within its footage (try 57 seconds in, where there is some perceived static). This shows some never seen before footage of Cars 2 (which at the time of writing, only had 300 viewers!)
Also, you get a nice surprise when calling the US number shown in the clip (try free with Google Talk).

Facebook Frenemy: What Women Think About You
A survey conducted by daily deals site Eversave, found that women are constantly annoyed by their 'friends' on Facebook.
Over 400 women responded to the survey, which asked questions like 'do you have a friend who is a drama queen' and 'do you have an obnoxiously proud mother as a Facebook friend'.
83% of respondents were annoyed at one time or another by their Facebook connections, with the most annoying of posts was a 'whinge or a complaint'.
All respondents said at least one Facebook friend tends to:
Share too much useless information (65%)
'Like' too many things (46%)
Spam Facebook to promote their interests (40%)
Use Facebook as a 'dreaming' platform about their life (40%)
Here's a post about a video we found that projects the typical Facebook users into archetypes http://www.strongmandigital.com.au/2011/03/29/stars-of-facebook-which-one-are-you/

It's Back! Rebecca Black's 'Friday' Hiccup
Sorry to say this, but 'Friday' is back in action: http://ping.fm/gZLiV
Tipping 67 million hits, we wrote about the pull-down yesterday (http://ping.fm/QMsg1), attributing it to the now 1.3 million dislikes.
This can only mean one thing now: being terribly bad is good for business, netting the so-called "star" over $60,000 so far.
Here it is below if you're one of the only people not to have their brain melted into a stew of goo:
What's your thoughts on Black's instant popularity (or mind-numbing infamy)?

Even Rebecca Black hates 'Friday'
The most annoyingly viral clip on YouTube, Rebecca Black's 'Friday' had, as of just a few hours ago, 64 million views.
We wrote about YouTube sometimes gets it all wrong here: http://www.strongmandigital.com.au/2011/03/25/how-sometimes-youtube-gets-it-all-wrong/.
Somewhere in between "gaining" 1.189 million dislikes, Rebecca Black, no doubt now depressed and lacking any self-esteem, has pulled the pin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0.
For those of you lucky (or unlucky) enough to see the original clip, it featured all the hallmarks of a ridiculous and amateur music video:
pre-pubescent teens
a teenager who can't sing
auto-tune to help the teenager who can't sing
lyrics written by someone who shouldn't (repetitive words, no meaning, embarrassing)
What did Rebecca Black gain from the clip? She got played on radio in the US. Twelve times. Before the listeners got annoyed.
YouTube also pays producers of viral videos 68% of their traffic intake, which is $1/1,000 page views. Meaning between the "talent" and the "producer", they made a cool $36,000.
Surprisingly enough, Black's single on iTunes sold 37,000 times, meaning she has taken from another $26,000 from that endeavour.

Social Checkins Useless? Not Any More
The Germans are fantastic at engineering. They've brought us some of the most innovative developments of our modern time.
It's only natural then, that they engineer a 'Social Checkin' to achieve a masterful marketing campaign - and for dog food.
Using Foursquare and a billboard, pet food company GranataPet allowed a 'master' to check in to their billboard, and then deliver an instant taste test for the 'dog'.
The billboard was placed on a popular dog-walking route, and was controlled by a distant server that sent an activation signal to the black box behind the billboard.
What this proves is that every Social tool, no matter how 'useless' it may seem, will soon play a dominant part in marketing and brand awareness.
Here's the video showing it in action: http://ping.fm/7pwQ7

Stars of Facebook: Which one are you?
We all have them. They're on our friends list - the classic archetypes.
They include the "Like-A-Lots" and the "Friend Tycoons" and the "Oversharers".
The video below gracefully exploits the types of Facebookers, and proves that Facebook interactions can often be completely frivolous, but can ascertain the role of entertaining diversions from our own daily lives.
The most interesting thing about this video is that names immediately spring to mind the minute they stereotype each individual.
Enjoy.

Why Mobile Phones Will Make Your PC/Mac Obsolete
The growth of mobile is tremendous, and more and more data about internet usage is proving this.
By 2015, we'll all be using our mobiles more than we use our desktops, and this study from Microsoft shows why.
So what does this mean for business? The time has come to turn attention to what people are most likely doing on their mobiles - and that is being social.
Tapping into Social Media now puts you in a better position to target these consumers now and later, when you won't have a choice.
Social Gaming and Social Shopping are becoming a massive part of the consumer lifestyle already, and as time goes on, these are becoming increasingly mobile activities, so it's only natural that everything else starts to go mobile too...
Innovation is starting to take hold of the handheld environment, and we will soon see desktops as nothing more than clumsy old immobile tools of the early 2000's...
Soon our devices will become an extension of ourselves: a better social experience, a better way to communicate with businesses, and even save our lives.

Oxford Dictionary Gets Social
OMG, LOL and the symbol for 'heart' part of Oxford English Dictionary's latest entries.
We all knew that sooner or later, two billion social users would influence something about our human kind - and now like it or not, language has folded.
So now OMG and LOL have "official" meanings, what are they?
"The intention is usually to signal an informal, gossipy mode of expression and perhaps parody the level of unreflective enthusiasm or overstatement that can sometimes appear in online discourse, while at the same time marking oneself as an 'insider' au fait with the forms of expression associated with the latest technology."
Interestingly enough, these aren't the first time OMG and LOL have been quoted in the dictionary, with OMG being 'from a letter' back in 1917 and LOL meaning 'little old lady' in the 1960's.
The 'heart' symbol though, is the first update to develop "via the medium of T-shirts and bumper-stickers".

How Sometimes, YouTube Gets It All Wrong
Rebecca Black's "Friday" is a YouTube sensation. No one knows why.
Usually, when you commit to a 'music video' and use pre-pubescent teenagers, poorly scripted and amateurish lyrics and autotune, you're probably going to get laughed at.
This time around, 44 million viewers have opted instead to make Rebecca Black a rising star.
There isn't much going for the music video, and for the most part, you tend to cringe a fair bit. One can only make sense of the viewership as Bieber-esque, or looking for a laugh.
Just proves that you don't have to be good, to actually be "good".
Can't see the video? Lucky you

YouTube is only as good as the content being produced. It comes as no surprise then to learn that YouTube has moved beyond simply paying a salary to it's 20 biggest drivers of traffic to the video-sharing site (all of them amateurs).
Now, YouTube wants to discover talent that has been relatively undiscovered, and is offering to invest $US35,000 in 25 of its 'partners'.
Those elegible to apply must have less than 300,000 subscribers and must apply with a video.

Facebook 'Converts' More Than Twitter
Research by an event registration company finds more money in 'Likes'.
Eventbrite.com is well known around the Social Mediasphere as being the primary location to create and share events.
This sharing of user-generated events usually has tickets with a price attached to it, so it was only natural to try and see where the most revenue was coming from.
In a Facebook vs Twitter affair, it found that transaction-based marketing is being driven by 'Likes'.
It also found that 60% of sharing success came through the order confirmation page, and that a single share on Facebook can drive up to 20% more sales.

How To Create A Custom Facebook Profile Just Like Mine
Nothing says creative force like a rebelling with a seemingly un-rebelable Facebook profile.
Here's how I did mine.
Select a decent image, landscape is most preferable
Using Photoshop, crop the left side of the image to 200px wide
Then, make slices of 100px until you reach the end of the photo
Starting 70px down from the top of the photo, make a landscape slice of 68px high, right across the image
Click "Save for Web" and go to Facebook
In Facebook, Upload a new photo album
Make the biggest image your profile photo
Tag the smaller images (there should be 5) from the image that needs to appear last, to the image that needs to appear first
To make it a lot easier, you can download the Photoshop Template here (it's got Barack Obama on it).

Social Buying in Australia: What Works and What Doesn't
Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that Social Buying is completely taking over the world, and changing the way the consumer buys from a retailer or even a manufacturer themselves.
The change is so devastating to traditional retail, that bankruptcy and severe backlash is now common-place in many of the brands we (used to) know and love.
So how is the Australian social buying market different to the rest of the world?
Our population is one of the main reasons why Groupon will leave our market till the end, and why they've opened their 11th location within Florida, USA alone (that is, they now have 11 locations within Florida!). Australia just doesn't have the manpower to group buy.
So what has that left us with? Some of the biggest successes on the web are deals of the day style websites, the most popular being http://ping.fm/sD7M5 ... this model has been used and loved by the Australian consumer for years.
The fundamental shift towards Social Buying though, has meant that everyone is having a go at some kind of 'incentivised discount purchase' website, but none have got it right so far - until now.
The first true website to cater exclusively to the Australian online buying habits is http://ping.fm/WQeqF (another product by the Deals Direct team). The main difference being that instead of using a population-based methodology for sales, the sales are determined by a time limit - meaning anyone and everyone can save.
This not only helps the consumer to get a deal when they want it, without having to worry about a supporting network of buyers to share the advantage, but it helps those companies that want to list and market to the Australian public - allowing them to maximise their profits and come away with a winning situation, no matter the public response.
Another major difference is the breakdown of locality-exclusion, another Groupon-defined mechanism. This is a monumental error in the Australian market, as segregating cities leads to a squeeze of potential customers, especially since Australians have an increasingly mobile culture.
DealMe.com.au is the first true Social experience that defines the difference of the Australian market to the rest of the world, including the US. Users can share the deal because they think it's a good deal, not to simply boost their chances of actually receiving this deal when the timer runs out.
A lot of the time, startups are looking overseas to form the basis of how they should be targetting Australians, but the fundamental attribute to any business aiming at targetting Australians, is understanding just how different Australia is to the rest of the world.

5 Steps to a #Facebook #Viropoly
Facebook. A home to over 600 million people. It seems that no matter what Facebook launches, they take the market.
It's true for many things, such as Facebook Places, which took Foursquare's crown not that long ago, Facebook Questions, which almost destroyed Yahoo's only dominant Social entrant, and now Facebook Marketplace, which could prove a direct competitor to eBay in the coming year (with all of its proposed upgrades and whatnot).
It's hard to imagine a life without Facebook, and more importantly, 600 million consumers can't get enough.
So how do you achieve notoriety on the worlds biggest network? A Viropoly is what you want (the point at which your Social Awareness makes your competition irrelevant).
Create a Facebook Page for your business or your product. That might sound easy, but it really is the first step. Without this, you're still left scratching your head.
Tell everyone you know. Again, might sound easy, but sometimes it's all it takes. If you've got, say 300-1000 friends, and you can ask them all to 'Like' your page, the follow-on effect that has puts your Page into the perspective of all of their friends, which could net you 1000's of Likes overnight
Tell everyone that would care. Check out Facebook Groups that align with your business objective. You'll probably find groups with 1000's, if not 100'000's members of die-hard fans and passionate supporters of the industry you're in. Just plug your Page and monitor the results.
Advermarket. Facebook's PPC might not be as effective as Google's Adwords at converting sales, but it sure is useful. You can target any age group, in any location, and even anyone who uses a specific keyword. Then all you need is to 'incentivise' your Likes (doesn't have to be monumental, just give away an iPad or Facebook-only discounts for example), and you're rolling.
Monitor, Respond and Measure. Take control of your Page, don't let people spam their wares on your hard-earned Page, respond to all positive and negative posts and always take into consideration things that work and things that do not work (and then apply that to Viropoly Round #2).
Following these brief steps could lead to a greater generation of potential leads from Facebook like never before, whilst leaving your competitors in the dust. That's a Viropoly.

Zuckerberg is World's 52nd Richest Person
Forbes upgrades Facebook founder's rank from 212th to 52nd.
In 2010, Mark Zuckerberg, aged 26 was worth an estimated $4 billion, until his recent assessment tripled his worth to $13.5 billion.
He isn't the only billionaire at Facebook though. It seems that six of Facebook's founders and investors have been taken to billionaire status alongside him.
Co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, six days younger than Zuckerberg, is Forbes' youngest billionaire, and is joined by original co-founder Eduardo Savarin and investors Sean Parker and Yuti Milner.
Facebook's growth has been substantial, accounting for 42% of the whole US population and valued at over $65 billion after Goldman Sachs and Russian investors from Digital Sky Technologies pumped $500 million into Facebook's bank account.
Mark Zuckerberg remains committed to give much of his wealth to charity.

Chrysler Terminates Employee for Compromising Twitter Account
7,500 followers outraged as Chrysler employee drops the 'F-bomb'.
The Tweet, composed by someone with access to Chrysler's official account @ChryslerAutos read like this: "I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the motorcity and yet no one here knows how to f**king drive".
The original Tweet was deleted from the account, but has been ReTweeted all over Twitter, which followed with an official apology from Chrysler themselves.
The mishap has been blamed on confusion between an employee's private and work account, but nevertheless, Chrysler has reported that the offending employee "has since been terminated".

The mishap has been blamed on confusion between an employee's private and work account, but nevertheless, Chrysler has reported that the offending employee "has since been terminated".

Apple Releases iPad 2 Guided Tours
With Apple reluctant to send iPad 2's for reviews before launch, they've released instead 14 teaser videos.
The videos have been masterfully produced in true Apple style, showcasing the reason the world is excited, and building up the demand prior to release.
Each video showcases new features never seen before, and Apple fans are running hot, waiting for its release.
Industry experts have suggested getting your hands on an iPad 2 will be easier than when buying its predecessor. When the original iPad came out, there was only a handful of Apple stores that could sell it to you, and lineups took all day. For iPad 2, incresing numbers of vendors will be offering the product.
Here in Australia, we'll have to wait till the end of the month to get our hands on one.
To see what all the fuss is about, here's the 14 videos.

How to make your online competition irrelevant
Using Social Media, it has never been easier to establish dominance over your competitors.
Here's 5 ways you can begin to take control today:
Play to your strengths: Easier said than done, but if you can hone in to why consumers love spending money with you, and then develop a social strategy to harness that, you're on a roll
Expose your competitor's weaknesses: All's fair in love and war. Online is no different. If you're aware of your competitors ripping customers off in any perceived way, it's time to tell the world.
Establish a Viropoly: http://ping.fm/mrhni
Third-party collaboration: Send out free samples of your goods, or perform some free or discounted services for those out there that can sway a population with a positive review
Run with criticism: Take it all, good and bad, and re-evaluate your strategies on the run
The above tips are by no means comprehensive, so speak to a strategist about your options today:

How to achieve Social Viropoly
Social Viropoly? It's a term we here at Strongman Digital coined to define the point at which your online competition cease to become real contenders to your market.
Sounds great, doesn't it? Achieving Social Viropoly, funnily enough, is so easy, anyone can do it.
It takes minimal effort, costs minimal currency, and takes up minimal time. All you need is some creativity.
Firstly, you need to take a good long look at your business. Analyse where it sits offline in relation to your competitors. Then take that approach online and see where that leaves you. More times than not, you'll find your competitors are doing next to nothing.
Then, you need to find where you'll make the best impression. Find your buyer's market and start to think outside the box when marketing to them.
Utilise tools like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Blogging to drum up support. Target the influencers online, and be part of every conversation that relates to your business.
For a great example of Social Viropoly, take Blendtec, the blender company that killed its giant competitors by releasing increasingly addictive videos of user-contributed suggestions of what to blend: http://ping.fm/LzdXD
Week on week, Blendtec's YouTube hits number in the millions - and they're still a tiny company.
What are you doing about your business today?

How to influence the masses using Social Media
It's funny how the people have the power again. With everyones help, you can get something for a super-low price, fight back against oppression, or create instant celebrities and millionaires.
So if you've got a business, how can you harness that colossal source of power?
First, there's a few things you need to know about the Social Environment. The four major tools are Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Blogs. By mastering the use of these four elements, you're in the scope of over 2 billion people.
These four elements all behave differently, and the end game for users on each of these platforms is uniquely different - so first, you have to find your market. Once you've found it, here's some tips:
Establish a consistent voice
Give out free advice relating to your industry
Become the be-all and end-all source for information about your industry
Answer all comments that come your way
Respond to positive mentions accordingly
Thank people for Likes or Follows
Respond carefully to any negativity and never delete the comments - this shows the public that you're human after all
Develop engaging content
Use multimedia
Encourage collaboration and sharing
Use incentives to drive traffic
If you can achieve this consistently, next you'll want to target those that can help spread your message. These are referred to as the 'influencers'. An influencer is one of those people on Twitter that has a disproportionate follower ratio to the people they actually follow.
This shows that the public are interested to hear what they have to say, and are not looking for a reciprocal follow-back. If you can find and cross-promote with these influencers, you suddenly have a world at your fingertips.
Need a boost in the online department? http://ping.fm/5ZyDt

Social Media. The fastest way to celebrity status.
You know, celebrity - or the desire to achieve such a status - has been the driving force of all ambition since we learned of direct benefits.
So much so, that until the internet came about, you really needed some kind of skill - be it singing, acting, sports - to gain enough traditional publicity to warrant people queueing for your signature.
That was until Social Media came into play.
There are now more 'celebrities' born of the web every day, than there were throughout our past.
For the most part, these celebrities are known as 'influencers'. An influencer is distinguished from a celebrity because of one main difference - instead of pulling crowds into a new movie, they pull traffic. Constantly.
These influencers appear everywhere. On YouTube, where the top 20 drivers of traffic are actually paid a salary by Google to continue to do what they do best. On Twitter, where 140 characters from a well-followed Twitterer reverberates faster and to more people than from a Journalist in traditional media. Right down to Facebook, where an influential member of a friendship network has the capabilities to encourage their whole network to convert.
From a business perspective, it is not only desirable to achieve such a status, but also crucial to tap into such influencers to get your message out.
It has never been more economical, efficient and powerful to engage the masses with the few, as it is today.
If your strategy is a little outdated, we'll bring you up to speed: http://ping.fm/J7krp

Google's Self Driving Car Revealed
The future of driving, as it seems, is here.
Google's self driving modified Prius was spotted last year by several enthusiasts, and now Google has revealed the automotive leap in full.
In the video above and below, it shows a driver and journalist taking a ride in the car around a test track, and reaching speeds of up to 65km/h.
Not one cone was hit and the vehicle executed acceleration, tight turns and braking to run the course.

iPad 2 Announced. World stops.
World tablet sales instantly decline as Apple announces new iPad.
There has been speculation for almost a year, and by March, Australian's can now own the iPad 2 ... and what a device it is.
The new iPad is thinner than its predecessor, and lighter too. The latest Dual-core A5 chip means its twice as fast.
It boasts 2 cameras, displaying FaceTime video chat in HD, wherever you might be.
Battery lasts longer on full use - up to 10 hours - but perhaps the most awesome thing about iPad 2 is its 'smart cover'.
Its magnetic attraction to the iPad means it fits snugly, and wakes/sleeps when you open/close the cover. The smart cover also folds into a triangle, propping the iPad 2 for use on a table, or allowing it to stand upright for video chat.
Such as been the reception that tablet sales worldwide have been on damage control. Oh, and it comes in white too.

Humanity vs Supercomputer: How We Lost at Jeopardy
IBM's Watson supercomputer proves we have officially built machines smarter than us.
The three-day Jeopardy competition between two of history's greatest players and IBM's Watson was a complete and utter embarrasment to the human race.
By the end of the competition, Watson earned a total of $66,147, with the two humans (Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter) earning $24,000 and $21,600 respectively.
Watson was awarded $1 million prize money, of which IBM will donate to World Vision.
Jennings bowed out gracefully after conceding defeat, saying "I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords".

Guinness World Records, Facebook, Oreo's and Lil Wayne
World's favourite rapper trumps world's favourite cookie.
The marketing push behind the popular Oreo cookie brand announced via Twitter that they would be going to set a Guinness World Record for the most Facebook Likes in 24 hours.
They managed to achieve that for a brief few hours, until popular rapper Lil Wayne decided to challenge the cookie company for the top spot.
After 24 hours, Oreo had 114,619 likes and was awarded the Record. Five hours later, Lil Wayne achieved 588,243 likes, and quickly gained first place.
Lil Wayne's marketers compared his status to that of "Bieber" and "Gaga" and wanted to prove their ability to "pull numbers". They did just that.

How Social Media gives Businesses an Unfair Advantage
It has been a long time coming, so here it is, the top 5 ways businesses can gain an unfair advantage by using Social Media:
Exposure Without The Price Tag: Think of the cost of advertising and PR in traditional media such as TV, Radio, Billiobards, Newspapers and Magazines. To do it well, you need hundreds of thousands of dollars. With Social Media, all you need is time and dedication.
An Army Of Ready Buyers: Tapping into Facebook and Twitter, you've got almost one billion consumers at your fingertips. All they need is some motivation and link to click.
B2B Powerhouse: Simply tapping into LinkedIn can boost your exposure in the B2B environment. It's a completely unfair way to expose your brand to millions of top-level management.
Popularity By Demand: Extreme success online happens when you go viral, and nothing is easier than using YouTube for that. It has turned amateurs and startups alike into overnight sensations.
Go Global, Instantly: Why stay small when the web is completely global? Using Social Media, you can give even your biggest competitor a run for their money.
For more information about how Social Media can power your business, give Strongman Digital Media a call.
