5 Ways Social Media Can Help Your Pet

This social thing is more about everything these days than it ever has been. Long gone are the days of it being a 'procrastination' tool.

This got me thinking - what about those close to us that physically cannot use Social, do they get any benefit from it?

5 Ways Your Pet Benefits from Social Media:

Self-diagnosis and advice: Social is a fantastic way to find a quick answer to a health-related question regarding your pet. Ask your friends, or the world "what does it mean when my (pet) ..." and you'll get a plethora of answers. Just make sure to visit a Vet to make sure it's not that serious.
Networking: Yep, even pets love networking. Social is a great way to find others with a similar breed, or a similar intention to get their pet to socialise. Geolocation technology can even show you who is nearby.
Fame: Everyone loves it, and pets generally crave attention. Taking snapshots and videos of you and your pet can instantly drive fame towards your pet.
Promotions: Most pet care companies (the good ones) have Social Media campaigns going. It's easy to see where you can raise your opinion about specific products or enter competitions to make looking after your pet, a more financially-friendly experience.
Accessories: The greatest collection of clothing and accessories lives online. Just by looking at someone else's pet, or visiting an online store or filtering Social Media results can get your pet looking current and modern at the click of a finger.
Surely there's plenty of other great things about Social that can help you and your pet live a more fulfilling existence. What do you use Social Media for, pet-related?

Domain Hacks the next Hot Thing in Domains

What is a domain hack ? Domain hacks became famous after Delicious (the bookmarking service) was in its startup phase.

You see, the preferred, delicious.com was taken, and being a startup, could not offload valuable funds to purchase it.

Instead, the founder purchased icio.us, and actioned a subdomain 'del' to precede it: del.icio.us

The site quickly shot to fame and ended up purchasing delicious.com

Since then, plenty of domain hacks have become famous and sold, some even more valuable than their .com equivalents.

One notorious sale was that of blo.gs...

A great use of a domain hack is the shortening of your domain to share links easier (in Twitter, where characters are valuable retail space, this helps tremendously). Some famous ones are:

nytim.es, fb.to, itun.es, goo.gl and plenty others.

What's your take on domain hacks?

Facebook Phones to debut in February http://ping.fm/XfOCp

Facebook Phones to debut in February

Speculation and screenshots are brewing at HTC's announcement of two (yes, 2!) Facebook phones.

HTC, the company famous for perfecting its Google-based Android phones, is moving forward with plans to launch two Facebook-themed phones next month.

They will feature Facebook's official colours and branding, and will actually run on a severely modified Android operating system.

The main difference with the Facebook phones is the immense Facebook integrations to connect users to their friends (via posts or calls) more easily.

The news feed (or Wall) will be the prominent default home screen, and undoubtedly will include Facebook Chat, Messages, Events and Photos to a greater capacity.

Old Spice is Back

2010's most successful Social Media campaign is back in 2011.

The latest clip titled "I'm Back" was released yesterday, and at the time of embedding, had only slightly over 90,000 hits. Would surely be more by the time you're reading this.

The short clip features Isaiah Mustafa and informs the viewers that Old Spice is back in 2011 to carry on advertising in its unique way.

Just last year we saw the extraordinarily successful campaign, where Mustafa would respond, react and try to engage with some of the web's biggest personalities.

Why content is still well and truly king

The web is full of information. As a matter of fact, 14 million blogs and articles are submitted every hour to the web. 14 million.

With that much content, your content is not likely to see the light of day right? Wrong.

In its most elementary form content is great on the SEO side. Quality content not only "fattens" your website, it provides RSS subscribers with a daily 'reason' to visit your site.

Google and other search engines crawl your website every time it is updated - meaning more content = more crawls, and a greater opportunity to appear in search results and potential better ranks.

Quality content is more than just about Google these days though, content should be engaging so that humans want to click through, land and stay to read one or many of the pieces you're submitting to your site.

The more content, the more opportunities to trigger visits to your site - the more people are reading and the longer people are staying, means a better quality site overall.

Socially, you cannot market without content. It's impossible to simply market your home page and hope for conversions. Content allows you to quell mental arguments and convince eager spenders to take you seriously.

If you need a content strategy, let us know. We've got heaps of answers.

A Message From Strongman Digital

2011 and Mother Nature's fury.

We watched in disbelief as many Queensland homes and businesses were drowned by the floods, and from what we've heard, over five states will be affected by the time this is over.

As we unite to rebuild whole suburbs, we look back at the ordeal to what helped us through the barrage of high and low tides. It was of course, the families, friends and strangers who selflessly devoted support and physical labour to rebuild.

What we noticed during the climax of the flood situation, was that traditional means of communication were letting us down. Electricity was down, telecommunication signals down, mobile service providers unable to cope with demand... so naturally, the population turned to the web (when possible).

What we saw was an unbelievable story unfolding before us digitally. On Facebook we saw selfess acts, plights for help, millions of images and eyewitness accounts. YouTube and uStream delivered live and recorded footage - sometimes breathtaking. Twitter delivered a storyline like no other.

Social Media, as it seems, has never been more welcome.

To those of you still picking up the pieces, we wish you a speedy recovery to regaining normality.

Kayak.com Now Offering Flights Into Space?

We took a double-take at this awesome easter egg.

Kayak.com is no stranger to hidden easter eggs, but this latest one is a real doozy.

Here's how to spend $US200,000 going into space:

Visit Kayak.com
Select "Flights"
Type in '90n' into the "From" field (90n is the code for Spaceport America)
Type in '50m' into the "To" field (50m is 50 miles - the distance to Earth's thermosphere)
Make your Departure and Arrival days the same
Select "First" class (you would anyway right?)
Select "Search"
Let us know how your trip went :)

Playstation Phone coming in February

They're also releasing the new PSP next week.
With iPhone and Nintendo DS completely cleaning up the portable gaming market, Sony is pulling out all stops to ensure it is staying in the game.

The new Playstation Phone is a direct rival to the iPhone, with the emphasis on mobile gaming and the ability to make a call (like all "traditional" phones can!).

It will have a touch screen and will focus around the ability to share contacts, experiences, games, movies and music with other users.

Their phone will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 14 to 17.

We wonder if iPhone and Android will now have a third, impressive competitor.

What is my Mobile Device strategy?

If you're in business, you've probably got a Search strategy in place, some of you might even have a Social strategy... but are you neglecting the powerhouse that is mobile technology?

Mobile phones are more than just playing games and checking into places - they're a wealth of exposure ranging from "need to know" time, to "boredom" time, and everywhere in between.

The largest players on the market are:

Apple iPhone
Google Android
Blackberry
Symbian (Palm)
Windows Devices (including 7)
Yes, Nokia, SonyEricsson and several others have been left out of this list purely because they don't have saturation any more - so if you still have one of these in your hands, you've been left behind.

What are the opportunities for you within the mobile market? Well, it's time to think outside the box.

What industry are you in? What are your competitors doing? Then think up of a concept to inform, entertain, engage and interact with your customers and potential customers while they're in their relaxed zone.

If you need any help, advice or action, we're here to help.

If your strategy is a little outdated, we'll bring you up to speed: http://ping.fm/8nc5g

Rebuild Brisbane Instantly after the Floods

Just did some maths...
They're saying that it'll take Brisbane 2 years to completely recover from these floods. Two years is a long time, around 17,532 hours.
South East Queensland has 2.77 million residents.
If each of those people donated an hour of their time, Brisbane could be rebuilt tomorrow. As a matter of fact, only 1 in 158 people need to donate an hour of their time for the same effect.

Social Media Defeating Traditional Communication in Brisbane Flood

As a previous resident and nearby inhabitant, I've seen first-hand the devastation that is the Brisbane floods.

Beside the most tragic outcomes of the flood, the follow-on effects has taken its toll on the most elementary requirements for human existence.

Food and fuel is becoming scarcer, but also the strains on electrical, water and communications infrastructure.

As more people become affected by the floods, the more they have been relying on communication to their families, friends and everyone in between. The problem with this is that, the communications infrastructure has already taken a severe beating by mother nature, and now 100,000's of people rely on traditional technology to get the message out (or not to feel so alone).

Something happened this year though, something that we didn't possess 118 years ago, or in 1978 - Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

These digital giants have really come into their own:

Facebook: Friends and family have instant knowledge and updates simultaneously from those they care about the most, sharing images and stories as the floods begin to recede

Twitter: A continuous stream of updates and newsworthy mentions from near, and heartfelt sympathy from afar

YouTube: Hosting a brilliant collection of footage from those right in the midst of it all

These networks have allowed us to connect in a truly different level, and the band of togetherness that holds Brisbane's modern society intact seems to be allowing us to achieve this more directly.

What's your Brisbane flood Social Media story?

Social Technology Delivers in Brisbane's Worst Floods

Facebook and Twitter are abuzz with "Brisbane" related mentions.

People in Brisbane, Queensland and Worldwide are sharing their thoughts, concerns and much more.

There has been a constant stream of images and videos, including live streaming of the natural disaster.

The latest is that Brisbane's flood banks have broken, and the city of Brisbane, Australia's 3rd largest city, is being evacuated as it goes under.

Social Technology is helping loved ones connect to their relatives and relieving the stress on telecommunication networks.

We send our best wishes and hopes to everyone affected.

Facebook will NOT shut down on March 15

Some people really love a good rumour.

There's some viral and untrue news spreading today that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants his old life back and desires to "put an end to all the maddness".

Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu confirmed that the rumour is in fact false.

The claims are completely out of character for the Social giant, considering their latest Goldman Sachs funding of $450 million and valuation of over $50 billion.

The reports originated from a ridiculous source, which tries to predict alien spaceship attacks and Obama pregnancies.

Just goes to show the power of the viral web huh?

Five Technologies Your Business Will Be Using in Five Years

As originally appearing here: http://ping.fm/YGHfQ

Social Media is constantly evolving to bring on bigger, faster and more powerful tools to its users. Which parts of Social is evolving and what tools will your business be tapping into in the near future?

Feeds and Streams: This is where all “real-time” activity occurs. Each place that is considered “social” has a feed or stream and is the space where all engagement is taking place. As online business continues to adapt to the changing demands of the consumer, it will be important to interact more frequently using feeds or streams. Funny enough, it doesn’t take much to get involved. Just send out a post or a tweet and you’re already part of the conversation.

Multimedia: A website just doesn’t cut it anymore. These days, and well into the future, our worth and value will be proved by the things we do outside of our own network. YouTube is the major player and will continue to dominate in both traffic and interest. As a result, TV and radio advertising spend will certainly drop as more and more businesses opt to produce content for YouTube. As iTunes’ popularity increases, podcasts will be another major tool businesses can utilize to tap into the right market.

Social Search: Search Engine Optimization won’t be the dominant force in online marketing within a few years, but will evolve to embrace Social. Social Media is already taking its place on Google, with real-time results, blogs, YouTube and other interesting things appearing in our search results. Facebook’s partnership with
Bing allows Facebook users to search the web from within Facebook, and displays results that your friends are interested in. This in turn, makes search more relevant for the end consumer as they know what is hot and what is not.

Mobile Technology: The fight to be in the palms of the consumer is already on. Apple’s iPhones took the market for awhile, but Google’s Android has quickly stepped up as a solid competitor. This means your customers are Socializing and Googling from their devices more and more. Your website should be useable from any device, no matter the size, and you should be enriching with the content that people love to use when they are on the run. To add fuel to the fire, both Facebook and Playstation are rumored to be entering the mobile device market, which should make for a very interesting device war.

Geolocation: Perhaps the most interesting space to watch is geolocation, where many handheld devices can pinpoint their location. For awhile, Foursquare held the popularity fort here, but Facebook’s Places has quickly gained traction. This allows businesses to “claim” their geolocation and let consumers “check in” when they are visiting. This alerts all of their friends that they are spending money with you. The geolocation space is evolving at an incredibly fast rate and tools are being developed to allow users to do things like check for celebrities, check speed cameras, read up on history and even save lives.

What do you think is hot for digital business?

Is Data 2011's Biggest Move?

Data is playing an increasingly important role on the digital web, so much so, that industry experts and digital moguls are predicting a 2011 climax in the Social Boom we're having.

What this means is that data is like digital gold. The more you have, about more people, in a point of relevance, the more it is worth to one or more specific organisations, corporate entities or individuals.

With so much information being recorded and used all over the web, its no surprise that giant companies with infinite potential are being born intermittently.

What this means for consumers is that their 'living' time is being utilised more efficiently, effectively and interestingly - engaging and converting them as required.

What this means for business is unbridled territory - unlimited opportunities to harness the power of the over-sharing environment.

Do you have any predictions for the 2011 digital boom?
