IBM's Watson supercomputer proves we have officially built machines smarter than us.
The three-day Jeopardy competition between two of history's greatest players and IBM's Watson was a complete and utter embarrasment to the human race.
By the end of the competition, Watson earned a total of $66,147, with the two humans (Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter) earning $24,000 and $21,600 respectively.
Watson was awarded $1 million prize money, of which IBM will donate to World Vision.
Jennings bowed out gracefully after conceding defeat, saying "I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords".

Guinness World Records, Facebook, Oreo's and Lil Wayne
World's favourite rapper trumps world's favourite cookie.
The marketing push behind the popular Oreo cookie brand announced via Twitter that they would be going to set a Guinness World Record for the most Facebook Likes in 24 hours.
They managed to achieve that for a brief few hours, until popular rapper Lil Wayne decided to challenge the cookie company for the top spot.
After 24 hours, Oreo had 114,619 likes and was awarded the Record. Five hours later, Lil Wayne achieved 588,243 likes, and quickly gained first place.
Lil Wayne's marketers compared his status to that of "Bieber" and "Gaga" and wanted to prove their ability to "pull numbers". They did just that.

NAB nabs Social Media attention
http://ping.fm/AVhCo
The 'breakup' campaign hots up and everyone is paying attention.
Its been half a week since National Australia Bank announced their unique split with CommBank, Westpac and ANZ.
Besides "fees", "ATM locations" and "secret charges", NAB decided to sever its ties by announcing their breakup in a romantic fashion, on Valentines Day.
The Tweet that sparked it all was met with confusion, stating NAB "had a very difficult decision to make", the night before Valentines day.

How Social Media gives Businesses an Unfair Advantage
It has been a long time coming, so here it is, the top 5 ways businesses can gain an unfair advantage by using Social Media:
Exposure Without The Price Tag: Think of the cost of advertising and PR in traditional media such as TV, Radio, Billiobards, Newspapers and Magazines. To do it well, you need hundreds of thousands of dollars. With Social Media, all you need is time and dedication.
An Army Of Ready Buyers: Tapping into Facebook and Twitter, you've got almost one billion consumers at your fingertips. All they need is some motivation and link to click.
B2B Powerhouse: Simply tapping into LinkedIn can boost your exposure in the B2B environment. It's a completely unfair way to expose your brand to millions of top-level management.
Popularity By Demand: Extreme success online happens when you go viral, and nothing is easier than using YouTube for that. It has turned amateurs and startups alike into overnight sensations.
Go Global, Instantly: Why stay small when the web is completely global? Using Social Media, you can give even your biggest competitor a run for their money.
For more information about how Social Media can power your business, give Strongman Digital Media a call.

Top 5 Excuses Why Your Workplace Does Not Allow Open Social Networking
Are you in charge of a workplace and have blocked access to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other social networking sites?
I come across these excuses on a daily basis, and here's my response to each.
Social Media Has No Value: This cannot be further from the truth. In fact, Social Media is current evolutionary state of human communication. It is the evolution of the internet, and the favourite way to communicate in the world. If your workplace is using this excuse, chances are they do not have any Social Media marketing strategies of their own - and their competitors are fast dominating the online space.
Social Media Promotes Procrastination: One of the most common excuses. I've actually come across some workplaces that allow open Social Networking - and they've never had a problem. If you're finding that your employees are wasting a lot of time Tweeting about their breakfast and watching 'Old Spice' on YouTube, chances are that they don't have enough work to keep them busy.
Social Media Breeds Toxicity: Out of all the negative's to ever come out of Social (and you can count them on your ten fingers), far more good has come out of it than bad. If you're worried about your staff taking their frustrations out in the open digital world, it's no different to them talking about it to a group of people in person. Internal toxic sentiment is bred internally, and is never a result of using a Social Network.
Unqualified Representation Damages Brands: Although true, perhaps its time to schedule a policy so that your workplace is aware of what they can and can't do when representing your brand online. There's nothing worse than having your reputation damaged by one of your own staff, but if they know their boundaries, it's one less thing you have to worry about.
Social Media Is Unmonitored: Again, this is true, but easy to negotiate. If your employees know that their activity can be traced online, they're less likely to abuse their privileges. Social Media activity is in fact one of the easiest things to trace, moniter and filter - but ensure that your employees 'private life', remains private.
Do you think Social Media has a place in the corporate environment?

Google and Facebook aim to buy Twitter
Offers of over $10 billion have been leaked from private meetings with the internet giants.
When Twitter told Google a few months ago that "you won't even get us for $5 billion", Google took it as a hint.
With news that Facebook planned to monopolise on Social sharing by purchasing Twitter, Google stepped in to prevent them from doing so.
Although no official reports from Twitter as yet, it will be interesting to see whether Twitter actually has a price.
Ten billion dollars may seem exorbitant, but this comes as Twitter celebrated its record-setting Tweets per second accomplishment during the Superbowl - 4,064 tweets per second. This comes second only to the Japanese, who sent 6,939 tweets per second during New Years Eve.

Apple to counter Android's growth with 'iPhone Nano'
With Android phones now dominating the smarthphone market, Apple is set to counter-attack with a cheaper, smaller iPhone.
The inexpensiveness and versatility of the Android has helped Google climb to the top of the smartphone charts, but Apple is hoping to claim the top spot once again.
Bloomberg revealed that Apple is currently building a new version of the iPhone that is around one-third smaller than the current iPhone 4 - and would be substantially cheaper.
The cost of these new devices could be as little as $200, without any contracts.

Old Spice Continues to Dominate in 2011
2010's most applauded Social Media campaign is back at it.
The latest in Old Spice's arsenal is "Scent Vacation", supposedly showcasing a new smell.
It's quite evident, that Old Spice - in the same family as Gillette, will continue to concentrate their efforts online rather than offline.

Google Accuses Bing Of Being A "Cheap Imitation"
Google claims to have caught Bing "red-handed" - blatantly displaying Google results, disguised as Bing.
The search giant has long suspected that Bing has been simply ripping off Google's results and displaying it as their own. So they devised a little test.
They created a synthetic search query 'hiybbprqag" and tied it to a result about seating in a theater in Los Angeles. After a while, the same result appeared on Bing.
Google's claim is that this could only occur if Bing is copying results from them - a claim that Microsoft responded to: "We do not copy Google search results".

Reduced For Quick Sale: MySpace, Going Cheap
A pivotal moment in history as the "old Facebook" officially dies.
We've come a long way from having 'Tom' as our first default friend, glittery backdrops and the seediest of all communities - and unfortunately, it has taken News Corp this long to realise just that.
During the News Corp earnings call, COO Chase Carey declared it as being the "right time" to place the network "under a new owner".
Beginning of 2011 marked the end of the ever-failing network, with 50% of original staff layed off, with MySpace recording the lowest advertising revenues in history.
News Corp purchased MySpace in 2005 for $580 million.
