LinkedIn ended its first day as a publicly traded company 108% higher in value than when each share was initially priced.
A share in LinkedIn will now cost you $94 each, as opposed to just a few days ago when it was estimated to be $45 each.
The shares climbed all the way to $122.70 overnight before settling at the $94 mark - with 300 million shares changing hands.
LinkedIn is now 36 times better off than the $243 million in revenue the company made in 2010, as opposed to Google at 5.5 times better.

It's Official: Amazon Kindle Books Outselling Real Books
"We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly" - Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO.
It has only been around four years since Kindle electronic books were brought to market - and already Amazon.com is selling more of them than the paper option.
Amazon, which has been credited to the demise of the retail book industry itself (Borders bankrupt, Barnes and Noble severe losses - the list goes on) has now marked that beginning of the end for hard books.
Since April 1, for every 100 books Amazon sells, it has sold 105 Kindle books.

Purina Introduces Three iPad Apps - For Your Cat!
Video Here: http://ping.fm/ycDt9
This is not a joke - with Cat Fishing, Tasty Treasures Hunt and Party Mix-Up debuting to "entertain your cat".
In the video above, it shows cats "playing" the games, and Purina are working on making these available to Android tablet owners.
Feedback from cat owners has been generally positive, but with one down side.
Although cats are embracing the new technology, iPad owners say these apps were built for 'de-clawed' cats, as their screens are suffering from severe scratching.

How To Get A Custom Facebook Link For Your Business Page
Many people ask me how to get a custom Facebook link for their business.
For example, Strongman Digital's one is: http://ping.fm/ng24N
Generally, you do not have this option available to you if your Page is brand new. The general rule of thumb is that you need to have 15-30 likes before you have the option to update your link.
If you have that many (or more), simply go to http://ping.fm/QyMvd
From here, you'll be able to see if your personal and business page has the ability to have a custom link name.
Again, this is one of the main reasons to establish a Facebook Page sooner rather than later, as anyone with enough numbers can easily take a name and claim it as their own.

The Importance Of Separating Social Strategy
Although the field of Social Media is now flourishing is being collectively cast as "online marketing", I still see some questionable practices whereby a company has marketed themselves (sometimes synchronised) collectively on the big networks, rather than tailor each strategy.
The issue with this is that you're only appealing to one market at a time, and creating "noise" rather than potential for engagement.
Here's why:
Facebook: Here lives over 600 million consumers that behave almost selfishly. They'll like you if they perceive value, achieve gains or show affiliation, but unless you're constantly pushing for their online time, they're likely to forget about you - and in extreme cases, hide your posts from their wall. With Facebook, it becomes important to engage using voting/questions/multimedia/games/competitions to keep the ball rolling - to avoid becoming stale and forgettable.
Twitter: Yes, this is a broadcasting medium, but it does call for some creativity. Simply spewing excessive noise just won't cut it. You have to evolve what is current, portray your news as unique, and promote in ways that cause a chain-reaction in responses or retweets. Never waste a Tweet but not including a link to some other multimedia space where you can catch those interested parties, always mention others, and keep an eye on those trends.
LinkedIn: The interesting thing about this network is that it is "grown up". With almost 100 million professionals, simply feeding your synchronised Tweets to LinkedIn can cause you more headaches than you bargained for. Instead, look for opportunities to apply your industry knowledge by answering questions, joining discussions in groups, and interacting with others in your network. It's also a good idea to introduce some LinkedIn apps to keep the multimedia content alive.
YouTube: One of the most important mediums of our time. Introducing regular, engaging content is the key to your success. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be unique to you - and it will be seen. Too many opportunities are lost as YouTube becomes one of the 'final' landscapes of any major Social Media campaign, where in essence, it should be the most important of all.

Viral Marketing: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Appearing here: http://ping.fm/wxoFX
Viral Marketing isn't a new concept, but it has gained traction in recent years with the introduction of economical Social Media tools. YouTube is the main agent delivering Viral Marketing these days, boosted by the 'sharing' vehicles of Facebook and Twitter, and plently of companies have had a go.
The goal of viral marketing is to go 'viral', or to entice millions of the members of your audience, to spread the word about you.
Some have made it, others have suffered tremendously. Here's a list of some great campaigns, and others not so great.
The Good
Burger King: Subservient Chicken
http://ping.fm/Yeceo
A fantastic example of corporates doing something to engage the audience. Subservient Chicken features a website with what seems like a room and a man in a chicken suit. You type in instructions for the Chicken to perform. Quite Addictive
The numbers: 450 million hits
Blendtec: Will it Blend?
http://ping.fm/s5MjB
A great example of a small business completely dominating the 'blender' market. Each time they release a video of one of their blenders, completely annihilating a gadget/toy/popular item, they garner millions of views.
The numbers: 155 million hits
Queensland Tourism: Best Job In The World
http://ping.fm/o8Wky and http://ping.fm/zi3CZ
An incredible campaign which included posting job ads all over the world, for someone to win a role at a job on the Great Barrier Reef. Over $70 million in publicity was generated.
The numbers: 1 million website hits
Million Dollar Homepage
http://ping.fm/6Ynlu
A total sensation from the minute it was uploaded, it was the brainchild of an English student Alex Tew, to make $1 million by selling 1 million pixels on his site - and he did.
The numbers: 1 million pixels sold
One Red Paperclip
http://ping.fm/a9ycd
An amazing story of a girl named Kylie who started with a single red paperclip, and kept trading it up for items until she ended up swapping for a house.
The numbers: 1 paperclip = 1 house, 10 million hits
The Bad
Rebecca Black: Friday
http://ping.fm/Nu8pD
YouTube gone wrong. A girl with no talent, sings terrible lyrics (autotuned of course). Has more dislikes than Justin Bieber.
The numbers: 44 million people have had a laugh
Sony: All I Want For Xmas is a PSP
http://ping.fm/APvGJ (not live any more)
Sony tried their hand at the blogging propaganda machine by 'recruiting' a (fake) blogger to write up about how much people should be asking for a PSP for Christmas. Unfortunately the IP address of the blogger was traced back to other websites that included Sony as a client.
The numbers: 1 very embarrassed big brand
Pepsi: Dinner 2.0
http://ping.fm/9UIV5
Pepsi remade an old Coke vs Pepsi video in the hopes to spark a pro-Pepsi revolution, but all of the sentiment proved Coke is still number one in the consumer's eyes.
The numbers: Coke 1 : Pepsi 0
General Motors: Create Your Own Ad
http://ping.fm/7kd0N
Although most of the shreds of evidence are long gone, some websites have preserved the best of GM's campaign backfire. GM wanted people to create their own ad of their (then) new car, the Chevy Tahoe. What resulted is a collection of pro-environmental ads, which were naturally anti the SUV.
The numbers: 1 GM Legal Team desperately trying to retaliate
Splinter Cell: Marketing With Murder Threats
http://ping.fm/2XCf8
Harmless enough (or not), Xbox game Splinter Cell: Conviction decided to market their product a little different, and hire an actor to dress as a terrorist and point it at some New Zealanders at a popular bar. Before another paid actor was to come in and save the day, the police got their first.
The numbers: 20 freaked-out revellers, 2 cautioned actors, 1 embarrassed marketing company

Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5 billion
In what was rumoured to be a bidding war between Facebook and Microsoft, ended with a price tag not seen for quite some time.
While we (in Australia) were all sleeping, Microsoft bought the Estonian company Skype for $8.5 billion.
What makes this even more tremendous, is that Skype isn't even profitable as yet - and has tremendous debt.
Last year Skype's revenues sat at $860 million, and had operating profits of $264 million. The company also carries $686 million in debt.
It is believed the Skype purchase was a tasty one by Microsoft: to further integrate into the Social web, and to claim its large userbase of 663 million users.
What do you think about the Skype purchase? Would it be better suited to Facebook?

Is AOL Going The Way Of MySpace?
Despite the recent acquisitions of TechCrunch and Huffington Post, AOL's profits have fallen 86%.
Another giant of the web struggles to hold on, as advertising revenue fell 11% to $313.7 million.
The sharpest nosedive in usership came from Search, which fell 21% and international display ads falling a shocking 46%.
As a result of the lower AOL userships, they've also felt the pain of declining subscriptions - with most diverting away to their competitors: Google, Bing and Yahoo.

It started with some buzz on Twitter to spread early news of Osama Bin Laden's death, and then Google copped it good.
As a matter of fact, it took only one hour for the traffic to spike one million per cent on May 1 7:30 to 8:30pm PST according to Google.

First Blockbuster, Now DVD's Failing In General
Netflix was attributed to the demise of Blockbuster, now the whole DVD industry has taken a 20% battering.
Purely digital movies might be taking over faster than we think, as the Digital Entertainment Group, which monitors DVD sales worldwide, found that DVD sales fell 20% in Q1 2011.
It also noted that home theatre sales worldwide fell 10%, and blames the "electronic sell-through", ie iTunes and Netflix, for stealing their market.
In fact, iTunes sales grew 11% over in the same period, while video-on-demand is up 9%.

How This Twitterer Broke News Of Osama's Death - By Accident
FULL ARTICLE HERE: http://ping.fm/DoXeR
Meet Sohaib. Around nine hours ago, he was just just trying to get some sleep in his neighbourhood of Abbottabad, Pakistan, but all he could hear was a helicopter hovering outside.
"Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event)."
What came next was a "huge window shaking bang" and for the next few hours, he, and other local Twitterers and local news speculated that it was either a UFO, a noisy spy craft or the Taliban:
"Since taliban (probably) don't have helicpoters, and since they're saying it was not "ours", so must be a complicated situation"
What Mr Athar didn't know, that only a few blocks outside his home, Osama bin Laden had just been assassinated.
A quiet IT employee, his Twitter following and media requests have skyrocketed some nine hours after the revelation.
Only time will tell what this means to this accidental reporter, who broke the big news in real-time, but just didn't know it.
Here's all of the collected Tweets from his account @reallyvirtual so far:
