We know that the most important element to any online marketing campaign is new, engaging, relevant content, but what many blogs lack is exactly that.
Poor English, useless information and spammy use of keywords are the fastest way to get your content ignored.
As an ex-journalist, my communication skills have come in very handy when coupled with a need to engage Google through SEO keywords and through engaging literature to grab new leads socially, and keep them reading, and ultimately, buying.
So here's my top 10 hints for successful blog writing:
Clear Vision: It's pointless to start writing without some direction. Aimless blogging on various topics that are remotely relevant won't help you establish credibility. Brainstorm your Blog titles/topics and have a good list - at least 50.
Timeliness: Relevance and Consistency are huge elements to blog writing. It's no good writing about something that happened 5 years ago. Keep it current. Also, maintain your intended rate of blogging. If you're committing to 5 blogs per week at the start, ensure you're still writing about the same three months down the track.
Research: Even if you (think you) are an expert in your field, chances are someone else may still be able to teach you something. Engage in Google searches, read up on popular forums and study Wikipedia to further boost your knowledge, and add ammo to your blogs.
Keywords: If you've got an SEO strategy in place, or you're wanting to increase the rank of your site for Google, it's important to use a good amount of keywords in your blog. Use them wisely and well... an average reader should not be able to pick up a spike of use in keywords in your blog. Keep it that way.
Links: Link to your other blogs, sections of your website, your contact page and your online Social accounts. This spreads the word about your presence faster than that of self-navigation.
Dynamic Content: Where possible, use YouTube videos and Images embedded in your blogs. This helps to engage readers further and helps to break up long-winded text.
Unique Angles: Do a search for your competitors and check out some of their blogs. It might be tempting to mimic their styles, but if you're aiming for their market, it's important you achieve individuality for your blogs.
Spread The Word: If you write your blog, there's only two ways someone will find it: if they're a regular reader or if they stumble across your site. Help people know what you've written by posting links to it everywhere: emails, Facebook, Twitter, other blogs, your Skype handle - everywhere you can.
Entice Comments: Ask your readers to respond to your blog. Many of the fears of open commenting are based around negative comments. Try to relax... Negative comments are usually constructive (unless they're spam, in which case you can delete them). Respond to every comment and ask everyone to subscribe to your feed.
Use RSS: RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication and it allows an interested user to subscribe to your feed, whereby they are notified immediately whenever you add a new blog, and they can read it in an RSS reader along with their other favourite subscriptions. You can go to www.feedburner.com to set one up.
If you keep to these 10, you're likely going to have a really engaging blog on your hands. Just remember to keep yourself motivated - because when you lose interest, so do your customers.
