Most politicians, or those that rely on public support for their cause, need more than just a smart PR campaign. In today's world, even the largest publicity campaign offline can be made null and void in the online world - because unlike back in the 60's, we're highly connected now - we have a voice and everyone can hear it.
It's called 'Global Chatter' and is the reason trends and popularity is translating directly into commercial success - or the success of brands, individuals and organisations.
So how can someone take advantage of viral word of mouth, in a medium which is basically alienated to their every-day, but more relevant than ever before?
Personal Website: It might seem a bit like self-promotion, but isn't that the whole point?
Blogs: When you get the chance, it's a good idea to voice your opinion about pressing and current issues. There's no better way to align those sympathetic to your point of view.
Twitter: Here is your ever-growing support base. Tweet up a storm, daily, and engage in 'chatter' that forms part of the reason you're trying to get your name out there. Respond to everyone who engages with you and thank everyone that follows you.
Facebook Page: This will help you tap into the non-Twittering opinions. A Facebook Page will allow you to see who 'Likes' what you have to say. Sync it with your Twitter for less work.
LinkedIn: Perhaps the rich and powerful on Twitter are on LinkedIn, and there's no better way to secure their support by gaining them as a 'Connection' on LinkedIn.
YouTube: You voice your opinions publicly, make it available to those who haven't had the chance.
The thing about Social is, is that unlike offline marketing, you can never do too much. Every little thing you do is planting one more seed that can grow into a viral supporter drive.
There are several US politicians/personalities/identities that have already embraced Social Media as their method to captivate audiences - but Australians are still quite slow to pick it up.
Why compete when you can dominate?
