Finding your customers: Facebook-style

Half a billion members and hardly any business is REALLY taking the Facebook world by storm. Why is that?

Ever since Facebook landed in our laps, we've been hooked... Facebook is a great place to be social, to reconnect with old friends, and to whinge/moan/ask to those that (seem to) care.

So in a place where everyone is making major decisions on everything from news, to brands, to decisions about purchases of goods and services, its astonishing that the features and penetration value of commerce within Facebook is being glanced over by most large companies.

I put this mainly to the shroud of doubt, confusion and misconceptions about Facebookers.

First thing we have to realise, is that there are 500 million+ CONSUMERS on Facebook. Yes, just like in reality, you can't just walk up to a group of people having a conversation and jump in and try to sell to them, but the motivation behind your Facebook presence should still remain intact in full.

Consider Facebook Pages - this is where YOUR business should be, and you can be as corporate as you want to be. Moreso, any 'Likes' you get are consumers that physically searched/were recommended to you. This is a great way to guage where your audience is, and how you should be targetting them.

Consider Facebook Groups - another goldmine, this time without your identity. If you can, just for a moment, put yourself into your customers shoes, and relative to your industry, as an open-ended question that could possibly generate a sale for yourself in the end - that's what your group name is. Mention NOTHING about your website/initiative, and just concentrate on monitoring the group's growth, and forward any/every prospective lead to your non-salesy blog.

Sell without selling. That's the most important thing. The minute a Facebooker sniffs a sales pitch, they're outta there.

Become like your customer - engage and entertain... after all, online, that's all that matters to us cashed-up millennials.

If your business still isn't generating any new leads from Facebook, we'll make it so: http://ping.fm/gIwFy
