How to use Twitter: a guide by @TomerGarzberg

"WTF, Twitter?" is a question I'm more or less asked on a daily basis, more or less.

Twitter, apart from being a magic lead generation tool, must be used with care. You see, constant, automated, robotic and repetitive Tweets about how good you or your business is, will likely get you or your business shunned faster than a door-to-door time-bleeder.

So how should you use Twitter? Twitter is the supporting role, the backup singers, that make what you're trying to say, sing. Using Twitter solely for the purpose of getting people to your website is like shoving a cash register in someone's face and telling them to buy - it just won't work.

Use Twitter to provoke a reaction to something you've done that's worth engaging a target audience. Got a fresh blog? An awesome YouTube vid? Tweet about that in a relaxed, non-uptight way, and BAM! you're likely to generate a reaction.

Don't be disheartened that initial reactions are small, because lets face it, unless you're Coca-Cola or Starbucks, no one is really going to know who you are. So use Twitter like guerilla warfare - check out what's hot on Twitter, and try to hitch a ride on the back, create some awesome content that will make people sit up or laugh, and before long you'll have people virally Tweeting about you.

That's the aim of the game. Twitter is not the answer, it is merely the vehicle to push your answer. Used correctly, Twitter can completely consume an entire audience, and direct them your way - cash register in the face or not.

If your Twitter strategy is merely an account with random Tweets, we can get it buzzing: http://ping.fm/WG1u2
