Many times I hear workplaces where Social Networks are off-limits. Infrequently, I find one or two workplaces with Social completely open to its staff. Why the disparity?
Social Media originally came about as tools to empower and enable users to share information more easily. As the tools became powerful and engaging, the tolls quickly grew to become methods for procrastination.
Procrastination and work generally don't go together - we all know that... but is it right to completely deny access to these new methods of communication?
Think of mobile phones. Before their miniaturisation and complete life function mobility, their sole purpose was to enable users to make phone calls, wherever they were.
When Nokia brought out its consumer-oriented devices, many workplaces banned the use of these during work hours to combat procrastination. That was until workplaces understood communication became empowered by the use of these devices - their employees could be completely mobile and still function completely from afar.
So is Social Media that much different? These tools allow instant bursts of information to the masses - and although it can be seen as anti-workplace, and to some, even a large risk against the workplace, what we have to understand is that we've evolved to be able to communicate like this.
Perhaps Social Media is still in its infancy and needs some getting used to - but to completely ban it from workplaces only displaces worker's attention away from the computer screen and onto their mobile devices.
So the question is this: is there a benefit for you that can be achieved by open, Social Media access to your employees?
