If I was an IT expert/developer/coder

Nerds. Once the butt of all jokes and seen as the bottom end of the food chain, and now dominating the rich list and employing the very people that disrupted their childhood. Aint life grand?

Nothing says revenge like success on a colossal level - and nerds everywhere owe it to the internet. The web has seen numerous bubbles and booms, the .com bubble, Web 2.0, and now the Social Mediasphere. These spaces were all created by visionaries, which empower the general populace (about 2 billion today).

So how does your everyday IT guy/girl, developer or coder get their skills noticed, polished, and ultimately, headhunted.

Social Media embodies dorks everywhere. It is a testament to their strategical prowess, their organisation of society - so if you can't beat them, join them.

Here's some tools to get you started:

Twitter: Developer heaven, and to boot, Twitter has the most open API on the planet
Facebook: Really good for friends, and not much else in this field... Just keep your friends posted on your progress
LinkedIn: No other tool on the net can hook up a developer with an entrepreneur as well as LinkedIn does
YouTube: Got some cool hacking tips or know how to mass-communicate through a loophole left in Google's API? Tell the world here
oDesk: Yes, it's outsourcing. Yes, it's competing with thousands. Yes, it's commercial - but really, who can argue. With the multitudes of jobs getting posted daily, you'd be out of your mind not to offer your services.
First things first. Twitter is king. On here, you'll find everyone who has made it, trying to make it, and everyone else. Tweet to your heart's content about whatever it is you do best, and eventually you'll catch someone worthwhile's eyes. Keep it up and you might score yourself a lucrative opportunity.

Get everyone you meet to add you to Facebook and LinkedIn. Your Facebook will help you keep track of everyone, whereas your LinkedIn will allow you to expand your black book of contacts. In this current digital climate, I'd be surprised if anyone with half a talent in the code world doesn't get headhunted.

Utilise a YouTube account and post videos of you doing insanely nerdy things - stuff that no one has ever seen done before, stuff that makes people's lives easier. That's the fastest way to generate a cult following.

Finally, to keep the money rolling in, oDesk.com yourself and offer your services to high-end, cutting-edge jobs - you'll laugh at how easy it is to earn a fantastic earning on this site.

At the end of the day, the Social Media train is here, stopping at all stations. If you're aware about what goes into Social Media, have ideas of your own, or can help an opportunistic visionary with your very own genius, it's time to step up the game.

If you don't ride this gravy train to its last stop, someone else will.

If any of you out there have an incredible grasp of development/coding and API integration, Strongman Digital Media would like to hear from you. Drop us a line on our Contact section of our website at www.strongmandigital.com.au
