Breaking out in the 'talent' universe is no easy feat. Everyone has their own uniqueness and captivates different audiences at different times.
However, getting a record deal, or scoring a few shows isn't as hard as it was in the old school. All you need to do now is generate a fan base, and with that empowering your mission, finding an agent/stage should be quite easy.
Here's how:
You're talented right? You sing/play the guitar/tell jokes/fake your moods... but does the rest of the world know about it? Do you have a:
Twitter account
Facebook account
MySpace account
LinkedIn account
YouTube account
Flickr account
iTunes account
Now, being in this industry, most of you will already have most of these accounts already down, but I'll go through the importance of the market that is established through the use of each.
Getting the word out:
This is the make or break moment for any talent-driven hopeful. Getting yourself heard is half the battle. Utilise a Facebook Page about yourself/your band, and keep this updated. Getting a Twitter account and Tweeting daily about your exploits is not a bad idea either (Twitter has this great way of helping relevant audiences find you). A personal Linked In page for you and your crew will also help you in the long run, as Linked In expands your network - this is where you'll find your agent/bar owners/people that will give you your big break.
MySpace. Now, I know I don't give MySpace enough credit, but it is still good for some things. MySpace still manages to be the go-to place for up-and-comers in the creative industries. So if you're a comedian/musician/actor/actress and don't have a MySpace profile, you might as well not exist.
Get a friend or your biggest fan (or one of your groupies) to video your performances and take heaps of photos. Once you've got these, post as much content to your YouTube and Flickr accounts.
If you want people to get a taste of your work for free on their iPhone/iPad/iPod, upload your videos/audio to iTunes and offer it for nothing. If demand is flowing, put $0.99 on each download... You could very well create your own financial resource from that alone.
The most important thing to remember with all Social Media is to keep it updated. Keep it fresh, keep it current, and have a presence... If people hint at your 1-minute-wonderness, or lack of talent, or lack of motivation, you've lost your cred for good.
