I recently wrote about the predicted demise of Apple in the mobile phone market after visiting Tokyo. There, Apple was giving iPhones away in a bid to gain market share - in a place where it did not hpld any power.
What we're seeing is the 'Tokyo-effect' getting a kick-start in other consumer-oriented marketing with the help of two very able competitors - Google and Facebook.
It's not a new concept, where large companies try to gain market traction in an industry that is unchartered for them, and for most, Google's Android was the #2 competitor to iPhone.
The Android, in fact, is gaining market traction faster than anyone had anticipated, and at the time of writing, had 32% of the smartphone market.
What is interesting though, is that Facebook has now announced its plans to launch an iPhone competitor. The Facebook phone aims to integrate phones and contacts with Facebook friends to further streamline connecting with people, and to increase the amount of Facebook-time people are spending.
Unless Apple drastically changes their strategy, it will only be the die-hard Apple fans that will carry on with the iPhone 4 (and 5?).
Our predictions are the Nokiafication of iPhone - a market leader, toppled by the answers to change.
