OMG, LOL and the symbol for 'heart' part of Oxford English Dictionary's latest entries.
We all knew that sooner or later, two billion social users would influence something about our human kind - and now like it or not, language has folded.
So now OMG and LOL have "official" meanings, what are they?
"The intention is usually to signal an informal, gossipy mode of expression and perhaps parody the level of unreflective enthusiasm or overstatement that can sometimes appear in online discourse, while at the same time marking oneself as an 'insider' au fait with the forms of expression associated with the latest technology."
Interestingly enough, these aren't the first time OMG and LOL have been quoted in the dictionary, with OMG being 'from a letter' back in 1917 and LOL meaning 'little old lady' in the 1960's.
The 'heart' symbol though, is the first update to develop "via the medium of T-shirts and bumper-stickers".
